They suggest only the third subcategory should remain as true electrophones. Under this view, a pipe organ remains an aerophone because air produces the sound. An electric guitar is a chordophone because strings create the vibration. This approach keeps the classification consistent with the original spirit of the Hornbostel-Sachs system. It focuses on what first creates the sound before electricity is involved.
