Later, the site became a Roman colonia. After the Roman period, it became a bishopric in late antiquity. Following the Treaty of Tudmir, the site eventually decayed as power shifted to Murcia. This led to the founding of new settlements, including the Islamic city of Madinat Ilš.
Madinat Ilš was built on the current site of Elche. 
The modern era brought significant industrial and social changes to Elche. In the 19th century, the arrival of the railway helped the city grow.

Elche offers many cultural sites for visitors to explore. The Elche Grand Theater was built at the start of the 20th century. It opened in 1920 as the Kursaal Theater and features a horseshoe-shaped interior. For contemporary art, there is L’Escorxador. This center is located in the old Elche Slaughterhouse from the 1940s. It provides spaces for theater, music, and visual arts. The Alejandro Ramos Folqués Archaeological and History Museum is another important site. It is located in the Altamira Palace. The museum allows visitors to see different stages of history, from the Neolithic period to the Islamic settlement.
