The history of the area began with an ancient site called Ilici. This site was located 3 km from the current city near the Vinalopó River. By the early 5th century BCE, Ilici had a consolidated urban structure. It served as a center of power for a local group known as a Phocaean-Iberian amphictyony. Later, the site became a Roman colonia. After the Roman period, it became a bishopric in late antiquity. Following the Treaty of Tudmir, the site eventually decayed as power shifted to Murcia. This led to the founding of new settlements, including the Islamic city of Madinat Ilš.

Madinat Ilš was built on the current site of Elche.

This Islamic city featured an almost rectangular floor plan. It was protected by a walled perimeter built between the late 10th and early 11th centuries. These walls were later improved in the 12th century under the rule of Ibn Mardanīsh. In the 13th century, the region underwent significant political changes. Following the Mudéjar Revolt, Aragonese forces conquered the area for Castile. The Sentence of Torrellas in 1304 and the Treaty of Elche in 1305 settled the rule in favor of the Crown of Aragon. Consequently, Elche became part of the Kingdom of Valencia.

The modern era brought significant industrial and social changes to Elche. In the 19th century, the arrival of the railway helped the city grow.

The city became famous for its footwear industry. During this time, the industry focused on espadrilles, which are textile footwear. Later in the century, entrepreneurs began investing in leather footwear factories. This growth continued through the Great War. In 1871, King Amadeo granted Elche the official title of city. Today, Elche remains a major footwear center with over 1,000 shoe factories. It is home to well-known brands such as Kelme and Pura Lopez.

The climate in Elche is classified as hot semi-arid.

This means the region experiences mild, dry winters and hot, dry summers. The city is very sunny, receiving between 2,900 and 3,000 hours of sunshine every year. Rainfall is scarce throughout the year. The average annual temperature stays above 18 degrees Celsius. Because of its location and weather, the economy also includes agriculture. Farmers grow dates, olives, cereals, and pomegranates. Other economic sectors include the rubber industry, trade, and aerospace companies like PLD Space. The Alicante–Elche Miguel Hernández Airport also serves the area. It is the fifth-busiest airport in Spain.

Elche offers many cultural sites for visitors to explore. The Elche Grand Theater was built at the start of the 20th century. It opened in 1920 as the Kursaal Theater and features a horseshoe-shaped interior. For contemporary art, there is L’Escorxador. This center is located in the old Elche Slaughterhouse from the 1940s. It provides spaces for theater, music, and visual arts. The Alejandro Ramos Folqués Archaeological and History Museum is another important site. It is located in the Altamira Palace. The museum allows visitors to see different stages of history, from the Neolithic period to the Islamic settlement.
