In *Elacatinus illecebrosus*, this process involves specialized structures called accessory gonadal structures, or AGSs. These structures develop from specific cell masses near the ovaries. During sex change, the ovigerous tissue is replaced by seminiferous lobules, which are parts of the testes. Interestingly, the ovarian lumen remains and acts as a collection region for spermatozoa. The reproductive cycle of these gobies usually occurs between February and April. They are multiply spawning species, meaning they can spawn multiple times.
