Before professional wrestling, he practiced baseball and American football. He also studied Ju-Jitsu and competed in amateur wrestling. In his early career, he used several different ring names. These included "Rudy Guzmán," "Hombre Rojo" (the Red Man), and "El Demonio Negro" (the Black Demon). He even tried the name "Murciélago Enmascarado II" (the Masked Bat II). However, a regulatory body ruled he could not use that name. In 1942, his manager suggested new names for a silver-clad team. Guzmán chose "El Santo" (the Saint), which contrasted with his early role as a rudo, or villain.

His wrestling career lasted nearly five decades and included many championship titles.

He won the Mexican National Light Heavyweight Championship and the Mexican National Middleweight Championship. He also held the Mexican National Tag Team Championship alongside Rayo de Jalisco. Other major titles included the NWA World Middleweight Championship and the NWA World Welterweight Championship. He was a key part of the undefeated tag team "La Pareja Atómica" (the Atomic Pair) with Gory Guerrero. Santo also had a famous rivalry with Blue Demon. This feud was so intense that it influenced the styles of both wrestlers. In 1962, he officially became a técnico, or hero, after his former teammates turned on him.

El Santo was also a prolific star in the world of cinema.

Between 1958 and 1982, he starred or co-starred in at least 53 luchador films. These movies often featured him as a superhero fighting supernatural threats. He battled zombies, evil scientists, and secret agents. One of his most successful films was "The Mummies of Guanajuato" in 1970. Another highly regarded film was the 1962 production "Santo contra las mujeres vampiro" (Santo vs. the Vampire Women). These films were often produced quickly and relied on recycled plot structures. Despite this, they were enormous successes at the box office in Mexico. His films even inspired other wrestlers to start their own movie series.

His impact on Mexican culture is reflected in the way he is remembered today.

When he passed away on February 5, 1984, he was given one of the largest funerals in Mexico. He was buried wearing his silver mask. The Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre honors his memory through the annual "Leyenda de Plata" (the Silver Legend) tournament. In 2018, the WWE inducted him into the Hall of Fame's Legacy wing. His life reached a level of fame that helped popularize professional wrestling in Mexico, much like Rikidōzan did in Japan.

His wrestling legacy continues through his descendants.

His son, Jorge, debuted in 1982 as "El Hijo del Santo" (the Son of the Saint). The tradition has moved into the third generation with his grandson, Santo Jr., who debuted in 2016. Another grandson, who originally wrestled as "El Nieto del Santo" (the Grandson of Santo), now works under the name Axxel. This family lineage ensures that the name El Santo remains a part of the sport. The character's influence can still be seen in murals and public art across the country.

El Santo's career represents a unique intersection of sports, cinema, and folklore. He moved from being a rudo wrestler to a national hero through both his physical skill and his film roles. By combining the athletic discipline of lucha libre with the fantasy of superhero movies, he created a new kind of celebrity. He was not just an athlete, but a character that people could believe in. His ability to maintain his mask and persona for decades helped build a myth that still exists in Mexican culture.
