It sits in the province of North Brabant. The city is part of a natural area called the Campine. A river named the Dommel flows through the city.

Long ago, Eindhoven was a small town. It had only about 170 houses. The city grew very fast in the 1900s. This happened because of new factories. These factories made things like tobacco and cloth. Later, a famous company called Philips was founded there. They made light bulbs.

A river called the Dommel flows through the city. Another stream, the Gender, used to flow through the center too. In the 1950s, people dammed the Gender to stop it from flowing. This helped manage the land where people live. Today, the city is a major place for many people to live and work.

The city has changed many times over hundreds of years. It began as a small town with only 170 houses.

In 1232, a leader named Duke Hendrik I gave the town city rights. This allowed the people to hold weekly markets for farmers. Later, the city grew because of new roads and canals. In 1843, a new canal branch connected the city to a larger one. Between 1866 and 1870, railroads were built to connect the city to other places. These new paths helped the city grow much larger.

Industry helped Eindhoven grow very fast during the 1900s. At first, many people worked with tobacco and textiles.

Another big company, DAF, was also founded there to make trucks. These industries brought many new workers to the area. Because of this, the population grew from 2,310 in 1815 to over 100,000 by 1935.

Eindhoven has faced some very hard times in its history. During World War II, large air raids caused much damage. One raid in 1942 hit the Philips factory and killed 148 people. Another raid in 1944 destroyed many parts of the city. After the war, the city had to be rebuilt. Many people chose to build in a new, high-rise style. This meant many old historical buildings were lost. However, the city kept growing and building new homes.

Today, Eindhoven is a modern and diverse place. As of 2025, about 249,054 people live in the city. Many people come from different countries, such as Turkey, India, and Morocco. The city is divided into seven districts, like the Centrum and Woensel-Noord.

As of January 1, 2025, the city has a population of 249,054 people. This makes Eindhoven the fifth-largest city in the Netherlands. It is also the largest city located outside the Randstad conurbation. The municipality covers a total territory of 88.92 square kilometers.

The city's geography is defined by its relationship with local waterways. Originally, Eindhoven was located at the confluence of the Dommel and Gender streams.

The Dommel river still flows through the city today. However, the Gender stream was dammed near the city center during the 1950s. This was done to manage the land and reduce flooding. Historically, the city grew on sandy elevations between the Dommel, Gender, and Tongelreep rivers. In the 19th century, people began using the river basins for housing. This caused occasional flooding in the city center. Today, some parts of the Dommel are being restored to their original natural states.

The name "Eindhoven" likely comes from regional words. The word "eind" means "last" or "end." The word "hove" refers to a section of land, about 14 hectares in size. A hove was a parcel of land that a local lord might lease to farmers. One theory suggests the name means "last hoves on the land of Woensel." Another theory involves the Gender stream, which was once called "Einde." This would make the name mean "farmstead on the river Einde."

Eindhoven has a long history dating back to the 13th century. Duke Hendrik I of Brabant granted the town city rights in 1232.

At that time, the town was small and had only about 170 houses. These houses were enclosed by a rampart, or a protective wall. The city was also a key location on the trade route from Holland to Liège. Over the centuries, the city faced many challenges. It was plundered by troops from Guelders in 1486. During the Dutch Revolt, the city changed hands between the Dutch and the Spanish. In 1583, Spanish troops captured the city and demolished its walls. Eindhoven did not officially become part of the Netherlands until 1629.

The Industrial Revolution in the 19th century triggered massive growth. New infrastructure like canals and railroads connected the city to other regions. In 1843, the city connected to the Zuid-Willemsvaart canal via the Eindhovens Kanaal. Between 1866 and 1870, railroads linked Eindhoven to Tilburg, Venlo, and Belgium.

Early industry focused on tobacco and textiles. However, the rise of electronics changed everything. In 1891, the company Philips was founded to manufacture light bulbs.

This led to a population explosion. The population grew from 2,310 in 1815 to 103,030 by 1935.

During the 20th century, Eindhoven became a hub for technical industries. The company DAF, originally a trailer factory, began manufacturing cars and trucks. The city also experienced the hardships of World War II. Large-scale air raids caused significant destruction. In 1942, an RAF raid on the Philips factory killed 148 civilians. In 1944, bombing during Operation Market Garden killed 227 civilians and wounded 800 others. Post-war reconstruction focused on high-rise styles. This meant many historical buildings were demolished to make room for modern plans. One example was the 1960s demolition of the Neo-gothic city hall.

Today, Eindhoven is a diverse and modern metropolitan area. The city is divided into seven distinct districts. These include the Centrum, Stratum, and the large Woensel-Noord and Woensel-Zuid.

The Centrum is the smallest district, with only 5,757 residents in 2006. The city is also home to the globally famous Design Academy Eindhoven. In the 21st century, new developments like Meerhoven were built on the site of the old Welschap airport.

Eindhoven has even been named the world's most relaxing city to live in for 2026. This is due to low pollution, high safety, and short commute times.
