Edith showed great mathematical talent from a young age. She earned a scholarship to Newnham College at Cambridge. In 1893, she achieved a First in the Part I Tripos examination. However, she could not receive a formal degree at that time. Women were excluded from graduating at Cambridge until 1948. She later earned a BA and an MA from Trinity College Dublin. This was possible after that institution began accepting women in 1904. Before teaching, she worked on searchlight design and gas turbine calculations. She also held a mathematics teaching post at Cheltenham Ladies’ College.
In 1899, Edith became a physics lecturer at the London School of Medicine for Women. 
Edith and her sister, Florence Stoney, were important partners in medical science. Florence was a medical doctor and a radiologist. In 1901, the Royal Free Hospital appointed Florence as a medical electrician. The following April, the two sisters opened a new x-ray service. X-rays are a form of radiation that can pass through soft tissue. This allows doctors to see bones and other internal structures. By working together, they helped establish x-rays as a vital medical tool. They were also active in the women's suffrage movement during this time.
During World War I, Edith provided essential medical support in dangerous areas. 
Edith's service extended to many different locations across Europe. 

After the war, Edith continued to support women in professional fields. She lectured at King's College for Women until her retirement in 1925. She was also an early member of the Women's Engineering Society. In 1936, she established the Johnstone and Florence Stoney Studentship. This fund supports research in biological, geological, or radiological science. It is designed to help students in Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa. The fund is still managed by Newnham College today. Edith died on June 25, 1938, at the age of 69. Her legacy lives on through the students she helped support.
