Ed White was a brave man.

Ed White was a pilot.

Ed White was a brave American astronaut.
In 1965, Ed flew on the Gemini 4 mission. He became the first American to do an EVA. An EVA is a spacewalk. This is when an astronaut goes outside the ship.
Later, Ed was chosen for the Apollo 1 mission. He was the senior pilot for this crew.
Ed White was a brave American astronaut and pilot.

In 1965, White did something very special during the Gemini 4 mission. He became the first American to perform an EVA, which is a spacewalk.
White worked hard to prepare for his life in space. He graduated from West Point in 1952 and later earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Michigan in 1959.
Many important events happened during his career. On June 3, 1965, he completed his famous spacewalk during the four-day Gemini 4 mission.

We remember Ed White for his courage and his many achievements. For his work on Gemini 4, he received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. He was also given the Congressional Space Medal of Honor after he passed away.
Edward Higgins White II was a pioneering American astronaut and aeronautical engineer.

White’s journey toward space began with a strong foundation in science and flight. He graduated from West Point in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Later, he earned a Master of Science in aeronautical engineering from the University of Michigan in 1959. He also completed training at the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base. Before joining NASA, he flew many different aircraft. He flew F-86 Sabre and F-100 Super Sabre fighters in West Germany. He also worked as a test pilot at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.
One of White's most important roles involved preparing others for spaceflight. He served as a weightlessness and extended-flight-training captain. In this role, he piloted planes used to train astronauts for the feeling of zero gravity. His passengers included famous figures like John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth. He even flew Ham, the first hominid to reach space. Through these flights, White helped develop the skills necessary for future space exploration.
In 1965, White achieved a historic milestone during the Gemini 4 mission. On June 3, 1965, he became the first American to perform an extravehicular activity (EVA). An EVA is a spacewalk, where an astronaut exits their spacecraft to work in the vacuum of space.
The Gemini 4 mission also presented technical challenges. The crew attempted a rendezvous with the Titan II booster, but they did not have enough training or fuel. This caused the spacecraft to move too far away from Earth. Additionally, the hatch mechanism had mechanical problems. The command pilot, James McDivitt, had to use his glove to help push the gears to lock the door. If the hatch had not been sealed, the crew could not have safely re-entered the atmosphere. Despite these difficulties, the mission was a major success for NASA.
Following his success in Gemini, White was assigned to the Apollo program. He was selected as the senior pilot for Apollo 1, the first crewed mission of the program. This mission was designated as AS-204. White worked alongside Command Pilot Virgil "Gus" Grissom and Pilot Roger B. Chaffee.
White's contributions to science and flight earned him several high honors. He was awarded the NASA Distinguished Service Medal for his work on Gemini 4. He was also posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
