Sullivan's career began long before he reached the television screen. He was born on September 28, 1901, in Harlem, New York City. His family enjoyed music through piano playing and phonograph records. In high school, Sullivan was a standout athlete. He earned 12 athletic letters in football, basketball, and track. He also served as the captain of his baseball team. He eventually moved into journalism, working as a sports reporter. He held positions at several newspapers, including The New York Evening Graphic. He later became a prominent Broadway columnist for the New York Daily News.
His transition to television was driven by the growing medium's potential. In 1948, producer Marlo Lewis convinced CBS to hire Sullivan for a Sunday-night variety show. The show originally broadcast from Maxine Elliott's Theatre on West 39th Street. In 1953, it moved to CBS-TV Studio 50 on Broadway. This location was later renamed the Ed Sullivan Theater. While some critics initially gave him poor reviews, Sullivan's style eventually won over families.
Sullivan had a massive impact on the careers of musical icons. He signed Elvis Presley for three appearances in 1956. Although Sullivan was initially wary of Presley's image, he later called him a "decent, fine boy." In 1964, Sullivan made a historic decision to book The Beatles. Their first appearance on February 9, 1964, became the most-watched television program in history up to that point.
One of Sullivan's most significant legacies was his commitment to inclusion. He often booked Black entertainers long before it was fashionable in television.
Sullivan's unique persona also became a part of entertainment history. Some critics described his mannerisms as awkward or stiff.
