Many people belong to these churches. About 18 million people are members. Most live in India, Africa, and the Middle East. They also live in Eastern Europe. The Syro-Malabar Church is the largest one. The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church is the second largest.
Some traditions are quite different from the Latin Church. For example, many Eastern priests can be married. This is not allowed in the Latin Church. These churches also use different styles of worship. They follow five historic traditions. These include the Byzantine and Armenian rites.

One major difference involves the life of the clergy. In the Latin Church, there is a strict rule of clerical celibacy. This means priests generally do not marry. In contrast, many Eastern Catholic Churches allow the ordination of married men to the priesthood. 
History shows that many of these churches emerged from older groups. Most Eastern Catholic Churches were formerly part of the Eastern Orthodox or Oriental Orthodox churches. Others were once part of the Church of the East. 
Specific historical events caused these major separations. The Council of Ephesus in AD 431 led to a split with the Church of the East. This church once expanded greatly across Asia before the Mongol invasions in the 14th century. The Council of Chalcedon in AD 451 caused another major split. This resulted in the Oriental Orthodox Churches, who used the term Miaphysite to describe their beliefs. 
Today, Eastern Catholics represent a minority within the global Catholic Church. Out of approximately 1.3 billion Catholics, about 18 million are members of the Eastern churches. 
Rules for these churches are managed by specific legal codes. The 1983 Latin canon law and the 1990 Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches govern their relationship. The 1990 Code was the first body of law to govern all Eastern Catholic Churches collectively.
