The DPT vaccine is a special shot. It helps people stay safe from three diseases. These are diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis. Pertussis is also called whooping cough.

Following its introduction, there was an extensive decline in the incidence of pertussis. In the United States, the whole-cell DPT vaccine was the standard until 1996. At that time, the acellular DTaP vaccine was licensed for use. In June 2005, the Tdap vaccine was licensed for use in adolescents and adults. This version uses a smaller concentration of diphtheria toxoids and pertussis antigens.
Vaccination data provides a clear picture of how these tools are used globally. In 2016, the CDC reported that 80.4% of children in the United States had received four or more DTaP vaccinations by age two. For older children, the vaccination rate for those aged 13–17 receiving Tdap was 90.2% in 2019. However, only 43.6% of adults over age 18 have received a Tdap shot in the last ten years. Globally, the World Health Organization estimates that 89% of people have received at least one dose of DTP. They also estimate that 84% of people have completed the recommended three-dose primary series, known as DTP3.
Different versions of the vaccine serve specific age groups and needs. The Td vaccine is used for children over age seven and adults, often as a booster every ten years. The DT vaccine is reserved for children under seven who cannot receive the pertussis component due to medical reasons. For pregnant women, the Tdap vaccine is recommended to reduce the risk of pertussis in infants. In the United States, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended Tdap during every pregnancy starting in 2012. Some countries also use pentavalent vaccines, which combine DTP with vaccines for hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenzae type B.
While these vaccines are safe, they can cause side effects. Common reactions to DTaP include soreness at the injection site, fever, irritability, and vomiting. These are usually mild and last only one to three days. More serious but rare reactions can include seizures or high fever. For Tdap, side effects may include headache, tiredness, or stomach aches. In pregnant women, research has noted an increased risk of chorioamnionitis, which is a placental infection. However, studies have not found an increase in preterm births or other serious pregnancy complications from the vaccine. The primary risk remains the diseases themselves, as a 2009 study noted that the greatest danger to unvaccinated children is the contraction of the diseases the vaccine prevents.
