Douglas Fairbanks was a massive star in early movies.

Douglas Fairbanks was one of the most famous stars of the silent film era.

Fairbanks used his physical skills to perform amazing stunts. Early in his career, he mostly acted in funny comedies. Everything changed in 1920 with his film, The Mark of Zorro. In this movie, he played a masked hero in a costume. This success led to other big adventure films like Robin Hood in 1922. He also starred in The Thief of Bagdad in 1924. He worked very hard to make these films look impressive.
His journey started long before he moved to the big movie studios. He was born Douglas Elton Thomas Ullman in Denver, Colorado, in 1883.
Fairbanks was a very important leader in the movie business. In 1919, he helped start a company called United Artists.
As time passed, the movie industry began to change quickly. Movies started using sound, which people called "talkies."
Douglas Fairbanks Sr. was a monumental figure in the early history of cinema.

Fairbanks' career followed a specific path from the stage to the silver screen. He began his journey in amateur theater in Denver, Colorado. After leaving school at age 15 in 1899, he joined a traveling acting troupe. He spent two years touring the country as an actor and assistant stage manager. By 1902, he moved to New York to perform on Broadway. He worked various jobs, including a clerk in a Wall Street office, to support his acting career.
His film roles transitioned through several distinct stages. Early in his Hollywood career, he was primarily a comedic actor. He worked under the supervision of director D. W. Griffith and appeared in romantic comedies.
Fairbanks was also a powerful businessman and industry leader. In 1919, he co-founded United Artists to protect his artistic freedom.
His personal life was also deeply connected to the film industry. In 1920, he married actress Mary Pickford. The couple was widely celebrated by the public and known as "Hollywood royalty."
The arrival of "talkies," or films with synchronized sound, marked a difficult period for Fairbanks. The transition to sound in the late 1920s changed how movies were made and consumed. This technological shift, combined with declining health, caused his career to fade.
Douglas Fairbanks died of a heart attack on December 12, 1939. He was 56 years old at the time of his death.
