This was the same day as the 32nd anniversary of the Wright brothers' flight.

Many different versions of the DC-3 were built.

Only 607 civilian planes were made. However, military versions were built in much larger numbers. These included the C-47 Skytrain and the Dakota. In total, over 16,000 planes were produced. Some were built in the Soviet Union as the Lisunov Li-2. Others were built in Japan as the L2D Type 0.

After World War II, many cheap military planes became available for airlines. Some people even changed the engines to newer turbine types. In 2013, about 2,000 versions were still flying. By 2017, more than 300 were still in the air. As of 2023, about 150 were still flying. They still do special jobs today. Some even fly on water using special floats.

The history of the DC-3 is rooted in intense corporate competition. In the early 1930s, Transcontinental and Western Airlines (TWA) sought a way to compete with United Airlines. United was using the Boeing 247, but Boeing refused to sell that model to any other airlines. This forced TWA to approach Donald Douglas for a new design. A pivotal moment occurred during a marathon telephone call between American Airlines CEO C. R. Smith and Donald Douglas. Smith persuaded Douglas to build a sleeper aircraft to replace the aging Curtiss Condor II biplanes.

Even after newer aircraft like the Douglas DC-4 and Convair 240 made the DC-3 obsolete on major routes, it remained useful.
