He was born on February 15, 1811, in Carrascal, near San Juan. His father, José Clemente Quiroga Sarmiento, was a military veteran. His mother, Doña Paula Zoila de Albarracín, was a hardworking woman who sold weaving to support her family. Of their 15 children, Sarmiento was the only son to survive to adulthood. He learned to read at age four from his father and his uncle. These early influences helped him develop strong oratorical and scholarly skills.

During his youth, Argentina was divided by intense political conflict. The country was split between two main groups: the Unitarians and the Federalists. The Unitarians, which included Sarmiento, wanted a strong centralized government based in Buenos Aires. They favored European customs and social progress. The Federalists wanted more autonomy for individual provinces. They were often based in rural areas and followed different social traditions. These disagreements led to several civil wars that shaped the nation's history.

Because of these wars, Sarmiento experienced several periods of exile. Exile occurs when a person is forced to leave their home country for political reasons. Between 1843 and 1850, he lived in Chile to escape the rule of Juan Manuel de Rosas. While in Chile, he became a prolific writer and teacher. He worked for the newspaper El Progreso and founded the first Normal School in South America. He also published his most famous work, titled *Facundo*, in 1845. This book critiqued the rule of Rosas and contrasted civilization with what he called barbarism.

Sarmiento used his time in exile to study global progress.

Between 1845 and 1847, he traveled extensively to examine different systems. He visited countries including Uruguay, Brazil, France, Spain, Italy, and the United States. He even traveled to Algeria and Armenia. During his visit to the United States, he started with only 600 dollars from the Chilean government. He wanted to observe how education and communication systems functioned in these different places. He intended to bring these successful models back to Argentina.

As President, Sarmiento implemented many large-scale modernizations.

Beyond schools, he helped develop the country's infrastructure. This included the expansion of train systems and the creation of a reliable postal system. His goal was to promote intelligent thought and democracy across Latin America. He believed that material progress and education were essential for a stable republic.

Sarmiento's legacy remains visible in Argentine society today.
