The disappearance of Doggerland was a slow and complex process. During the Pleistocene epoch, sea levels dropped frequently due to glacial periods. This exposed the land repeatedly. As the last major ice age ended, the climate became much warmer. This warmth caused massive ice sheets to melt. As a result, sea levels began to rise steadily. The land also underwent isostatic adjustment. This means the ground began to tilt upward as the heavy weight of the ice lessened. These combined forces caused the land to sink and the water to move in. Eventually, the rising sea turned the land into low-lying islands. By around 6500 BCE, the British peninsula was physically disconnected from the continent.

Geological history shows that the connection between Britain and Europe has changed many times. Before the middle Pleistocene, Great Britain was a peninsula of Europe. It was connected by a large chalk structure called the Weald–Artois Anticline. About 450,000 years ago, during the Anglian stage, an ice sheet filled much of the North Sea. This created a large proglacial lake in the southern part. The lake was fed by the Rhine, the Scheldt, and the Thames rivers. Eventually, the lake overflowed and carved a channel through the anticline. This created the Channel River. Some scientists believe the final break between Britain and the continent happened during later glaciations. These occurred around 340,000 or 240,000 years ago, or perhaps during the Saalian Glaciation around 160,000 years ago.

During the early Holocene, Doggerland was a diverse and productive landscape. Around 10,000 BCE, the north-facing coast featured lagoons, saltmarshes, and mudflats. There were also many beaches, inland streams, and lakes. This environment supported thick woodlands and valleys. It was likely one of Europe's most successful areas for hunting, fishing, and fowling during the Mesolithic period. An extensive river system once drained the southeastern part of the Dogger Bank area. This system flowed into the Outer Silver Pit lake. Geologists have named this system the Shotton River
