A display device is a tool used to show information. 

Many displays work using an electrical signal. We call these electronic displays. Some displays only show certain shapes. These are called segment displays. They are made of small parts called segments. These segments turn on and off to make a shape. A seven-segment display shows only numbers. 
Some displays cover a whole area like a rectangle. These are often called video displays. They are used to show moving pictures. You can find them on a television set. They are also in computer monitors. Some people use them in virtual reality headsets. 
There are many different ways to make a screen.
Display technology is all around us every day. You see it when you look at a smartphone. You see it when you watch a TV. Some older displays used cathode-ray tubes, or CRTs. Other mechanical types have been used in the past. A split-flap display is one example. Ticker tape is another historical type. These tools help us see and feel the world. They turn electrical signals into things we can understand.

Many electronic displays are segment displays. These devices do not show full images. Instead, they show specific digits or alphanumeric characters. They are called segment displays because they use several segments to create a shape. These segments switch on and off to form a specific glyph, or symbol. The segments are usually made of liquid crystals or single light-emitting diodes (LEDs). 
Another major category is full-area 2-dimensional displays. These cover a large, usually rectangular, area. They are often called video displays because they are the main way to show video. 
To make these full-area displays work, engineers use different underlying technologies. One common method is the liquid-crystal display, or LCD. Another is the light-emitting diode, or LED. Many modern screens use a backlit LCD or a thin-film transistor (TFT) LCD. There are also quantum dot displays, known as QLED. Some advanced screens use organic light-emitting diodes, or OLED. These can be further categorized into AMOLED and Super AMOLED displays.
Scientists and engineers are always developing new ways to show information. Some technologies are still being tested in labs. For example, surface-conduction electron-emitter displays (SED) and field-emission displays (FED) are experimental. Carbon nanotubes are also being studied as an experimental technology. There is also microLED technology currently in development. Other specialized methods include digital light processing (DLP) and interferometric modulator displays (IMOD). Even laser-powered phosphor displays exist. These different technologies allow for different levels of brightness and color.
Display technology can also move into three dimensions. Three-dimensional displays go beyond a flat surface. These include swept-volume displays and laser displays. Holographic displays and light field displays are also ways to create 3D images. 
Before modern electronic screens, people used mechanical types of displays. These did not rely on light-emitting parts. One historical type was ticker tape. Another was the split-flap display, which is also called a flap display.
