It is a very interesting world with a size of about 1,123 kilometers across. This moon is made of two main parts: a rocky core and a thick outer layer of ice. The rock and the water ice have roughly equal mass. This means the moon is quite heavy for its size. Dione is actually the 15th largest moon in our whole solar system. It is even more massive than all the smaller moons put together.

The surface of Dione looks very different depending on which side you see. The leading side faces the direction the moon travels. This side is very bright and covered in many round craters. These craters were made by rocks hitting the surface long ago. The trailing side is much darker and has strange features. It has large, steep cliffs called chasmata.

These cliffs were once thought to be wispy snow, but they are actually giant cracks in the ice. There are also long, bright lines called virgae that run along the equator.

Scientists have found clues that Dione might be more active than it looks. One big clue is a huge mountain ridge called Janiculum Dorsa. This ridge is 1.5 kilometers high. The icy crust seems to bend downward around this ridge. This bending suggests the ice might be sitting on a warm, liquid salt water ocean.

This would make Dione a world with a hidden ocean under its frozen shell. The moon also has a very thin layer of gas called an exosphere. This thin layer is made of oxygen ions. It might form when radiation from Saturn splits water molecules in the ice.

We have learned a lot about Dione thanks to famous space missions. An Italian astronomer named Giovanni Domenico Cassini first found the moon in 1684. He used a large telescope at the Paris Observatory to see it.

Much later, the Voyager 1 probe took the first close-up pictures in 1980. After that, the Cassini spacecraft flew by Dione many times during the 2000s and 2010s. These flybys helped us see the cliffs and the thin atmosphere clearly. These missions showed us that Dione is a complex and changing place.

Dione is part of a busy neighborhood around Saturn. It shares its path with two smaller moons called Helene and Polydeuces. These are known as trojan moons because they stay near Dione in its orbit.

Dione also has a special relationship with another moon named Enceladus. They are in an orbital resonance, which means they pull on each other as they circle Saturn. This pulling creates heat inside the moons. This process is called tidal heating. It helps keep parts of these icy worlds warm and active.

It has a mean diameter of 1,123 kilometers. This makes it the 15th largest moon in our solar system. Despite its size, Dione is quite massive. It is more massive than all known moons smaller than itself combined. The moon is composed of a silicate rocky core and an outer mantle of water ice. These two components, rock and ice, have roughly equal mass. This internal structure gives Dione a density of about 1.48 g/cm3.

Scientists believe Dione's interior might be more complex than just solid rock and ice. Observations from the Cassini spacecraft suggest a rocky core with a radius of about 400 kilometers. This core is surrounded by a 160-kilometer-thick envelope of H2O, which is the chemical formula for water. Some models suggest the bottom of this layer could be a liquid salt water ocean. This idea is supported by the Janiculum Dorsa, a ridge that is 1.5 kilometers high. The icy crust appears to bend downward around this ridge. This puckering suggests the crust was warm when the ridge formed, likely due to tidal heating from a subsurface ocean.

The surface of Dione is divided into two very different regions. The leading hemisphere faces the direction of the moon's orbit. It is uniformly bright and heavily covered in circular impact craters. The trailing hemisphere is significantly darker. It is marked by a network of bright ice cliffs known as chasmata.

These cliffs were once thought to be wispy deposits of snow or ash. However, the Cassini probe revealed they are actually tectonic fractures. These fractures create steep, bright cliffs that are several hundred meters high. Dione also features linear features called virgae. These lines are hundreds of kilometers long but less than 5 kilometers wide. They run parallel to the equator and appear to be relatively young.

Dione's orbital mechanics involve a complex relationship with other moons. It is currently in a 1:2 mean-motion orbital resonance with the moon Enceladus. This means Dione completes one orbit around Saturn for every two orbits Enceladus completes. This resonance helps maintain the orbital eccentricity of both moons. Eccentricity refers to how much an orbit deviates from a perfect circle. This gravitational tugging causes tidal heating, which provides a source of internal heat. This heating is particularly important for the geological activity seen on Enceladus. It also maintains a small eccentricity of 0.0022 in Dione's own orbit.

In addition to its resonance with Enceladus, Dione has its own small companions. It possesses two co-orbital moons, which are also called trojan moons. These moons are Helene and Polydeuces. They are located at Dione's Lagrangian points. Specifically, Helene is located 60 degrees ahead of Dione, and Polydeuces is 60 degrees behind it. Helene was first imaged by the Voyager 1 probe in 1980. Polydeuces was discovered much later, on October 21, 2004. These small moons stay in a stable position relative to Dione as they all orbit Saturn.

The history of Dione's discovery began with the Italian astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini. He discovered the moon in 1684 using a large aerial telescope at the Paris Observatory.

Cassini also discovered several other moons, including Tethys, Rhea, and Iapetus. He originally named his discoveries Sidera Lodoicea to honor King Louis XIV. It was not until 1847 that the moons were given names from Greek mythology. John Herschel suggested using the names of the Titans, who were the siblings of Cronus. Dione is named after a Titaness from these ancient myths. Modern exploration began in earnest with the Voyager 1 flyby in 1980 and continued with many Cassini flybys.

Dione also possesses a very thin outer layer known as an exosphere. In 2010, the Cassini probe detected a thin layer of molecular oxygen ions. This layer is extremely sparse, with a density between 0.01 and 0.09 per cm3. While scientists could not directly detect water in this exosphere, they have a theory for how it forms. Highly charged particles from Saturn's powerful radiation belts may strike the ice on the surface. This process can split the water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. This thin gaseous envelope shows that even small, icy moons have active chemical environments.
