The history of the region stretches back many centuries. In the seventh century A.D., the traveler Hieun Tsang wrote about a powerful kingdom here. This kingdom was ruled by a leader named Sasanka. Long before the city was established, the area was a wilderness with thick forests. It was occupied by Mundari tribals and other groups like the Santals and Mundas. The district was once part of the Manbhum region. After the Partition of India, it was part of Bihar. It later became part of West Bengal during the mid-1950s. Finally, it became part of Jharkhand in the year 2000.
Dhanbad is a major center for education in eastern India. It is home to several prestigious engineering colleges. The Indian Institute of Technology, formerly known as the Indian School of Mines, was established in 1926.

Transportation in Dhanbad is highly developed, especially by rail. The Dhanbad railway division is the largest revenue generator among all Indian Railway divisions.
