Its name likely comes from the French phrase meaning "River of the Monks." This name was used by French colonists in the region. Today, the city is the center of a large metropolitan area. This area includes six counties and has about 750,000 residents. It is the largest metropolitan area located entirely within the state of Iowa.

Archaeological evidence shows that humans have lived at this river junction for at least 7,000 years. Researchers have identified several prehistoric occupation areas in what is now downtown Des Moines. In 2010, workers discovered a site called "the Palace" during construction for a wastewater treatment plant.

This site contained well-preserved house deposits and numerous graves. Archaeologists found more than 6,000 artifacts at this single location. This discovery was made by State of Iowa archaeologist John Doershuk and experts from the University of Iowa. The area also once held at least 15 to 18 prehistoric Native American mounds.

Modern history began in May 1843 when Captain James Allen supervised the construction of Fort Des Moines. [IMAGE:File:Map of Fort Des Moines sites in downtown Des Moines_Modified from ''Newslett. The U.S. War Department chose this name over the proposed "Fort Raccoon." The fort was built to control the Sauk and Meskwaki peoples. The government had moved these groups to the area from eastern Iowa. The fort was abandoned in 1846 after the Sauk and Meskwaki were moved to the Indian Territory. However, the Meskwaki continued to return to the area until about 1857.

Early settlement was difficult due to harsh conditions and natural disasters. In May 1851, a massive flood struck the town.

The Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers rose to unprecedented heights. This event inundated the land east of the Des Moines River. Crops were destroyed and houses were swept away by the water. The city had to rebuild itself from scratch after the flood. Des Moines was officially incorporated as a city on September 22, 1851.

Following the flood, the city entered an era of significant industrial growth. In 1864, the Des Moines Coal Company began systematic mining in the region. Soldiers at the fort had actually opened the first coal mines to supply the blacksmith. By 1876, a single mine near West Seventh Street employed 150 men. By 1893, there were 23 mines operating in the region. This industry helped the city grow rapidly. By 1880, Des Moines had 22,408 people and became the largest city in Iowa.

At the turn of the 20th century, the city focused on urban design through a "City Beautiful" project.
