This evolution led to the creation of a 'protolanguage.' Words acted as anchors for sensory information and memories. Once the brain could process words, it could form complex concepts. This moved human speech from a "beads-on-a-string" model to a hierarchical structure. This transition was made possible by a process called Merge. Merge allows for the complex, nested grammar we use today. Bickerton's work remains a significant part of how we study the intersection of biology and culture.
