During these visits, the doctor replaces or modifies the archwire and the colorful ligatures. This frequent adjustment helps shift the teeth into the correct final position.

Once the braces are removed, the work is not yet finished. The teeth have a tendency to move back to their original positions. To prevent this, patients use retainers to keep the teeth in alignment. Hawley retainers are a very common type of retainer. Many patients use a transparent plate for about six months after treatment. For patients who had long or difficult treatments, a fixative wire might be attached to the back of the teeth. This provides extra support to ensure the teeth stay straight. Some patients may also need a gum lift or a fiberotomy to improve the gumline before using a retainer.

Modern orthodontics continues to evolve with new technologies. Customized orthodontic systems now combine 3-D imaging with treatment planning software. Some systems even use a robot to custom-bend the archwire for the patient. Additionally, modern archwires often use nickel-titanium or temperature-sensitive materials. These wires are limp and flexible when cold, making them easy to thread through brackets. Once they reach body temperature, they stiffen and apply a constant, light force to the teeth. This combination of biology and technology allows for more efficient and comfortable results.
