Demosponges have been around for a very long time. The first ones may have appeared during the Precambrian period. This was at the end of the "Snowball Earth" time. 
These sponges have many ways to make new life. They can reproduce sexually by making eggs and sperm. They can also reproduce asexually, which means making copies of themselves. In a process called budding, small sponges grow from the parent. Some freshwater sponges make tiny clumps called gemmules. These clumps have a hard layer to protect them. Gemmules can survive very harsh conditions until things get better. When they find a good spot, they release new cells. These cells then grow into brand new sponges.

These animals also utilize asexual reproduction to survive and spread. One method is called budding, where groups of cells differentiate into small sponges. These new sponges are either released from the surface or pushed out through the oscula. 
The history of demosponges stretches back to the very beginning of animal life. They may have first appeared during the Precambrian period, following the Cryogenian "Snowball Earth" era. Since direct fossils are rare, scientists often find them through chemical fossils. They look for steranes, which are hydrocarbon markers from cell membranes. 
Because many demosponges live for a very long time, they are scientifically invaluable. Some species have lifespans ranging from 500 to 1,000 years. Scientists study their aragonite skeletons to reconstruct ancient environments. By analyzing these layers, researchers can find data about past ocean temperatures and salinity. 
Human interaction with demosponges is also quite significant. The most economically important species are the bath sponges. These are harvested by divers or grown in commercial settings.
