The first group is strictly benthic fish, which can rest directly on the sea floor. These fish are denser than the water, so they have negative buoyancy. This helps them lie on the bottom without much effort. The second group is called benthopelagic fish, which float just above the bottom. These fish have neutral buoyancy, meaning they can hover at a certain depth without sinking or floating up. Many deep-sea benthopelagic fish use a swimbladder, or a gas sac, to help them stay at the right level.
