Eventually, the British took control of the land. In 1776, the counties of Kent, New Castle, and Sussex became the state of Delaware. This happened after a long dispute over where the borders should be.

Today, the peninsula is a busy place for many different reasons. About 818,014 people lived in the twelve counties there in 2020. Dover is the largest city in Delaware. Salisbury is another large center in Maryland. Many people work in farming or commercial fishing. Tourism is also a big part of life because of the beautiful beaches. You can visit places like Ocean City or the Delaware Beaches.

Traveling around the peninsula is easy thanks to several paths. A canal called the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal cuts through the north. There are many bridges that cross this water. You can also use the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the Bridge-Tunnel to reach the mainland. If you are coming from New Jersey, you can take a ferry to Lewes, Delaware.

The climate is often warm and humid. This makes it a great place for many plants and animals. The area stays connected to the rest of the country through these many roads and waterways.

European colonization brought significant changes to the peninsula. In 1566, a Spanish expedition led by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés reached the area. They hoped to find the fabled Northwest Passage. However, a storm prevented them from establishing a colony. In 1631, the Dutch West India Company founded a colony called Zwaanendael. This settlement lasted only one year before a dispute with local Indians led to its destruction. Later, New Sweden was established in 1638. Eventually, the British took control of the region. The state of Delaware was formed in 1776 when three counties declared independence from Pennsylvania.

Political boundaries on the peninsula were often the subject of long disputes. A major conflict known as the Penn-Calvert Boundary Dispute lasted for 80 years. This disagreement involved the borders between Maryland and Delaware. The dispute was finally settled by the Chancery Court in 1735. Another legal case, Penn v. Lord Baltimore, helped clarify land rights. It decided that Maryland's claim to Delaware was void because the Dutch had already colonized Zwaanendael. These legal battles helped shape the exact lines we see on maps today. The current border includes the Transpeninsular Line and part of the Mason-Dixon line.

Today, the peninsula is a place of both rural life and growing populations. As of the 2020 census, the twelve counties on the peninsula had 818,014 people. The largest city in Delaware is Dover. Salisbury, Maryland, is another major commercial center near the middle of the peninsula. The climate is classified as humid subtropical. This means the weather is often warm and moist. Travelers can also reach Lewes, Delaware, by using the Cape May-Lewes Ferry from New Jersey.
