Building the system required careful management to avoid delays. The DMRC was given autonomy to act as a special-purpose vehicle. This gave the company power to hire staff and control funds. They hired the Hong Kong MTRC as a technical consultant. This helped with construction techniques and rapid-transit operations. One major challenge occurred in 2000 regarding track gauge. The Ministry of Railways required the use of broad gauge. This was different from the DMRC's preferred standard gauge. This decision resulted in an additional capital expenditure of ₹1,100 crore. 
Technological progress has led to very modern operations. The Magenta Line and Pink Line both use driverless operations. Driverless operations began on the Magenta Line in December 2021. The Pink Line followed in November 2021. This makes the Delhi Metro one of the largest driverless networks globally. It holds the fourth position in the world for such networks. The system uses Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC). This technology allows trains to run at a 90-second headway. A headway is the time interval between two trains. 
The Delhi Metro also plays a vital role in environmental protection. In 2011, the United Nations certified the DMRC. It was the first metro system in the world to receive carbon credits. These credits were awarded for reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. The system reduces annual carbon emission levels by 630,000 tonnes. This helps improve the air quality in the city. 
Finally, the metro connects to many other transport systems. It has interchanges with the Noida Metro and the Rapid Metro Gurgaon. The DMRC took over the Rapid Metro Gurgaon in 2019. It also connects to the Delhi-Meerut RRTS. The RRTS is India's fastest urban regional transit system. These connections turn the metro into a central hub. It links various cities and transit modes together seamlessly.
