Daniel Romanovich was a powerful ruler who lived from 1201 to 1264. He was a member of the Romanovichi branch of the Rurikid dynasty. This family had long ruled many lands in Eastern Europe. Daniel held several important titles during his life. He was the Prince of Galicia and the Prince of Volhynia. He also served as the Grand Prince of Kiev in 1240. In 1253, his status changed when he became the King of Ruthenia.

Daniel's early life was marked by political instability. His father, Roman the Great, had united Galicia and Volhynia in 1199. When Roman died in 1205, Daniel was only four years old. Powerful nobles, known as boyars, forced Daniel and his mother into exile. Daniel spent his childhood at the court of King Andrew II of Hungary. He eventually returned to claim his throne in 1211 with a united army. However, his early reign was difficult. Local boyars frequently rebelled against him. These conflicts forced him to flee or fight for his lands many times.

In 1223, Daniel faced a massive new threat from the Mongols. He fought at the Battle of Kalka River as part of a coalition of Rus' princes. The allied force was destroyed, but Daniel survived the fighting despite being wounded.

The Mongol invasions became even more intense in 1239 and 1240. During this time, the city of Kiev fell to the Mongols in December 1240. The city was largely destroyed after a fierce siege. Daniel had to move his capital to Kholm to protect his people. In 1241, the Mongols passed through Galicia and Volhynia, destroying the city of Halych.

To survive, Daniel had to make difficult political choices. In 1246, he traveled to the capital of the Golden Horde at Sarai. There, he met the Mongol leader, Batu Khan. Daniel was forced to accept Mongol overlordship to prevent further destruction. During a banquet, Batu told Daniel he was "one of ours now."

While Daniel provided soldiers to the Mongols, he secretly worked to oppose them. He built alliances with the Kingdom of Poland and the Kingdom of Hungary. He also reached out to Pope Innocent IV for help against the Mongol threat.

Daniel worked to build a strong and wealthy kingdom. On August 17, 1245, he defeated a combined force at Yaroslav. This victory allowed him to reunite his father's lands. He focused on economic growth and stability. Daniel invited many different groups to live in his cities. These included German, Polish, and Rus' merchants and artisans. He also welcomed Armenian and Jewish communities. He founded the city of Lviv in 1256 and named it after his son. He also fortified many other towns to protect his subjects.

Daniel also introduced important military reforms. He equipped his heavy cavalry with European-style plate armour. He also established light cavalry units armed with bows. In 1253, a representative from the Pope crowned Daniel as king at Dorohochyn. This official recognition elevated his lands to the status of a kingdom.

However, Daniel was not entirely free from Mongol pressure. In 1259, Mongol forces entered his lands and demanded he destroy his city walls. Daniel complied to avoid a direct assault on his towns.

By the time of his death in 1264, Daniel had achieved much. He had reconstructed the territories held by his father. He had managed to minimize the influence of the Golden Horde in his lands. Unlike other princes, his successors were not required to pay tributes to the Mongols. This allowed his principality to attract many refugees from other regions. Daniel is remembered by historians as an exemplary and wise statesman. His legacy lives on through the cities he built and the kingdom he established.
