The city changed a lot because of oil. Long ago, it was just a small place for fishing. In 1933, plans began to look for oil in the ground. A team of experts came to Dammam to help. They drilled a well called Dammam No. 1 in 1935. That well did not work well, so they tried others. Finally, on March 4, 1938, a well called Dammam No. 7 found a lot of oil. This well was named the "Prosperity Well."

Dammam is the fifth-largest city in the country. It is part of a larger metropolitan area known as Greater Dammam. This region includes the neighboring governorates of Khobar and Qatif. The total population of this metropolitan area reached 2,743,318 in 2022. This makes it the third-largest urban area in Saudi Arabia.

The city's growth is closely linked to the petroleum industry. Dammam acts as a major administrative center for Saudi oil operations. The King Abdulaziz Port is a vital part of this economy. It is the second largest port on the Persian Gulf. As of 2022, the port had a cargo capacity of 2,038,787 TEUs. A TEU is a standard unit for measuring shipping containers. This capacity makes it the eighth largest port in the Middle East and North Africa region.

Before the oil era, Dammam was a small fishing hamlet. The Dawasir tribe settled the area around 1923. This settlement occurred with permission from King Ibn Saud. The region changed forever during the 1930s. In 1933, an oil concession agreement was signed in Jeddah. This agreement involved the government and The Standard Oil Company of California. Geologists arrived in Dammam to plan drilling sites. They began working on the first drilling rig cellar in January 1935.

Finding oil required many attempts and careful monitoring. The first well, Dammam No. 1, did not produce promising results. Work on that well stopped in early 1936. Workers then drilled Dammam No. 2, but most subsequent drills were disappointing. On December 7, 1936, workers started drilling Dammam No. 7. While it struggled at first, it succeeded on March 4, 1938. This well produced a large amount of oil. Saudi Aramco named it the "Prosperity Well." It proved the kingdom had a massive supply of hydrocarbons.

Modern Dammam is a complex urban and industrial center. The city features contemporary urban planning with separated residential and commercial zones. To grow, the city used land reclamation to expand into the shallow Persian Gulf. Because the area is arid, it relies on desalination plants. These plants treat seawater to provide fresh water. They pump approximately seven million cubic feet of treated water every day. This water supply supports both the citizens and the many local factories.

Transportation networks connect Dammam to the rest of the world. The King Fahd International Airport serves the region. It is the largest airport in the world by land area. It opened in 1999 and is located 20 kilometers northwest of the city. The city is also a major rail junction. The Dammam passenger terminal was the first built in Saudi Arabia in 1981. Future plans include a Gulf Railway. This line would connect Kuwait to Oman through several countries.

The climate in Dammam is a hot desert climate. Temperatures are extremely hot from March to October. During the summer, nights remain warm due to the urban heat island effect. This effect happens when cities trap heat. Dust storms called shamals often blow in from the north. Rainfall is sparse and usually occurs in winter. In December and January, the area may see heavy thunderstorms or hail.

Industry continues to expand through specialized zones. The first Industrial City of Dammam is now surrounded by urban areas. Because of this, a second Industrial City was established further away. This second city sits on nearly 1,000 square kilometers of land. It currently hosts 120 factories, with 160 more under construction. Many global companies operate here, such as Siemens and Hitachi Energy. These plants manufacture products for both local and international markets.
