The family Crocodylidae is organized into two main subfamilies: Crocodylinae and Osteolaeminae.

The subfamily Crocodylinae includes 13 to 14 living species and six extinct species. The subfamily Osteolaeminae was named by researcher Christopher Brochu in 2003. This group contains the genera Osteolaemus and Mecistops, along with several extinct genera. Within these groups, species show different adaptations. For example, the American crocodile is a larger species that shows regular sea-going behavior. It can inhabit hypersaline lakes and brackish water.
