Some islands are special pieces of land. We call them continental fragments. These pieces broke off from large continents. They often end up far from their old homes.

Even though these ridges are made of continental material, they are classified as continental fragments instead of microcontinents. This distinction helps scientists understand the specific origins of different underwater structures.
The physical properties of these fragments are quite specific. The average crustal thickness of these fragments is approximately 30 kilometers. They often feature a sedimentary layer that can be up to 10 kilometers thick. This layer of sediment can overlay two to three different crustal layers. The density of these fragments is also very similar to that of typical continental crust. These specific measurements allow researchers to distinguish fragments from other types of oceanic features.
Many famous islands and plateaus serve as examples of these geological phenomena. Some microcontinents are remnants of the ancient supercontinent known as Gondwana. Madagascar is a major example of a fragment from this ancient mass. Other examples include the island of Timor and the northern Mascarene Plateau, which contains the Seychelles Microcontinent. The Azores Plateau is another significant continental fragment located in the North Atlantic Ocean. 
It is important to note that not all islands are continental fragments. For instance, the Kerguelen Plateau is a large igneous province formed by a volcanic hotspot. Because it was associated with the breakup of Gondwana and was once above water, it is considered a microcontinent, but not a continental fragment. Other islands, such as the Hawaiian Islands and Iceland, are considered neither microcontinents nor fragments. Some islands, like Borneo, the British Isles, Newfoundland, and Sri Lanka, are simply part of a continental shelf. They are separated from the mainland only by inland seas that have flooded the margins.
Geology is a field that is constantly evolving as new landmasses form. We can even predict the creation of future microcontinents. A continent named Ajan is expected to form in the future. It will break away from mainland Africa in approximately 3 to 20 million years. Currently, a "proto-microcontinent" is forming in the Davis Strait between Greenland and Canada. This ongoing process shows that the Earth's crust is in a constant state of movement and change.
