Conrad loved to look at the world. He traveled to see new things. He also climbed high mountains. He did this to find plants.

Gessner's work connects the old stories to modern science. He combined facts from old books with his own real discoveries. He was one of the first people in Europe to describe certain animals. He wrote about the turkey, the guinea pig, and the brown rat. In April 1559, he saw a tulip in a garden in Augsburg. He called it the Turkish tulip. Gessner also revolutionized the study of animals through his zoological writing. From 1551 to 1558, he produced the *Historia animalium*. This massive encyclopedia spanned 4,500 pages across four volumes. The volumes covered quadrupeds, amphibians, birds, and fishes. 
As a naturalist, Gessner was often the first to describe specific species in Europe. He provided early descriptions of the turkey, the guinea pig, and the brown rat (*Rattus norvegicus*). In April 1559, he observed a tulip in an Augsburg garden. He named it *Tulipa turcarum*, or the Turkish tulip. 
Gessner’s scientific work was supported by a vast network of scholars. He maintained extensive correspondence with naturalists across Europe. These friends sent him plants, animals, and gemstones to study. In return, Gessner often named new plants after his correspondents. This web of communication helped spread scientific knowledge more quickly. He also loved the mountains and climbed them every year for exercise and botanical collection. He even wrote about his excursions to the Pilatus mountain chain in 1555.
Conrad Gessner died of the plague on December 13, 1565. He was 49 years old and had recently been ennobled. At the time of his death, he was still working on a major botanical text called *Historia plantarum*. Although he did not finish it, his notes were used by other authors for two centuries. The completed work was finally published in 1754. His legacy lives on through the many plants and animals that bear his name.
