These tracheids allow for water transport and structural support. As the tree grows, it produces annual rings. These rings consist of large, thin-walled earlywood formed at the start of the season and small, thick-walled latewood formed later. To defend themselves, conifers produce oleoresin, a mixture of turpentine and rosin. When a tree is wounded by an insect or fungus, this resin flows to the site. However, their dominance declined during the Cretaceous period as flowering plants, or angiosperms, began to diversify and take over many ecosystems. Their needle-like leaves often feature a waxy covering to minimize water loss through evaporation. They also possess strong tracheid vessels designed to tolerate the internal pressure caused by ice. These adaptations allow them to thrive in cold, high-latitude climates where other plants might fail.

Despite their resilience, many conifer species currently face significant threats. As of 2025, 94 conifer species are listed as endangered, and 30 are considered critically endangered. They are often attacked by pest insects, such as bark beetles and wood-boring longhorn beetles, which create galleries under the bark. Fungal diseases, such as needle cast, can also be particularly harmful to young trees. Beyond ecology, conifers hold immense economic value for humans through the production of timber and paper. Their survival is closely tied to both environmental health and global industry.
