Confucius's early life was marked by hardship. His father, Kong He, died when Confucius was only three years old. He was raised by his mother, Yan Zhengzai, in poverty. During his youth, he studied the Six Arts at schools for commoners. He held a social status known as shi. This position was between the aristocracy and common people. To support his mother, he worked as a bookkeeper and a caretaker of sheep and horses. After her death, he mourned for three years to follow tradition.

His political career in the state of Lu involved complex power struggles.

He eventually rose to the position of Minister of Crime. Confucius wanted to establish a centralized government. He attempted to do this by dismantling the fortifications of powerful families. He relied on diplomacy rather than military force. In 498 BCE, the Shu family successfully razed the walls of Hou. However, other families like the Meng and Ji resisted these reforms. These conflicts made powerful enemies for him, especially Viscount Ji Huan.

Political instability led to his eventual exile. The state of Qi allegedly tried to sabotage Lu's reforms. They sent the duke of Lu 100 good horses and 80 beautiful dancing girls. The duke became distracted by these gifts and neglected his duties. Confucius felt it was time to leave his post. He used a small custom violation regarding sacrificial meat as a pretext to depart. From 497 BCE to 484 BCE, he traveled through many states.

He visited places like Wey, Song, Zheng, Cao, Chu, Qi, Chen, and Cai. He shared his political beliefs, but they were not widely implemented during his travels.

Many ancient texts are associated with his name. He is traditionally credited with editing the Five Classics. However, modern scholars are cautious about these attributions. Some of these texts may have much older origins. His specific sayings were compiled in the Analects. These aphorisms were not written down until many years after his death.

Confucianism has seen many stages of development throughout history. It experienced setbacks after the Qin conquest. However, it gained official sanction under Emperor Wu of the Han dynasty. During this time, his works became mandatory for those seeking government careers. During the Tang and Song dynasties, it evolved into Neo-Confucianism. In the 20th century, the New Confucianism movement emerged in the Republic of China. This movement sought to apply his ideology to a modern context. Today, Confucianism remains integrated into the Chinese social fabric.
