People have used tools to count for thousands of years. The abacus is one of the oldest counting tools. In the 1800s, Charles Babbage designed a mechanical computer. 




Computers have changed the world through many big steps. In the 1950s, engineers created the integrated circuit chip. 


A computer is a programmable machine designed to execute sequences of arithmetic or logical operations. These sequences are known as computation. Modern digital electronic computers use generic sets of operations called programs. These programs allow a single machine to perform a vast range of different tasks. A complete computer system includes several essential components. It requires hardware, an operating system, software, and peripheral equipment. Sometimes, the term refers to a group of linked computers working together, such as a computer network or a cluster. 
To understand how a computer works, we must look at its internal mechanisms. A modern computer typically features at least one processing element. This is usually a central processing unit (CPU) in the form of a microprocessor. The CPU performs the actual arithmetic and logical operations. It is supported by computer memory, which often uses semiconductor memory chips to store data. Inside the processor, a sequencing and control unit manages the workflow. This unit can change the order of operations based on stored information. This allows the machine to follow complex, changing instructions. 
Computers interact with the outside world through peripheral devices. These devices are categorized by their specific roles in the data cycle. Input devices, such as keyboards, mice, or joysticks, allow users to retrieve information from an external source. Output devices, like monitors and printers, present the results of the computer's operations. Some modern tools, such as touchscreens, serve as both input and output devices. These peripherals are necessary to save and retrieve the results of the machine's computations.
The history of computing began long before electronic circuits existed. For thousands of years, humans used simple tools like tally sticks or the abacus to aid calculation. In the ancient Fertile Crescent, people used calculi, which were small clay spheres or cones, to represent counts of items. The Antikythera mechanism, discovered in 1901, is believed to be the earliest known mechanical analog computer. Created around 100 BCE, it was used to calculate astronomical positions. Later, instruments like the astrolabe and the slide rule provided more advanced ways to solve mathematical problems.
In the 19th century, Charles Babbage revolutionized the field. He is often called the "father of the computer" because he originated the concept of a programmable machine. In 1833, he designed the Analytical Engine. This was a general-purpose design that included an arithmetic logic unit and integrated memory. Babbage planned to use punched cards to provide data and programs, a method borrowed from mechanical looms. 

The transition to electronic computing occurred during the mid-20th century. During World War II, the first digital electronic calculating machines were developed using electromechanical parts and thermionic valves. 

Technological leaps in the late 20th century triggered the Digital Revolution. The invention of the semiconductor transistor in the late 1940s changed everything. This was followed by the development of the silicon-based MOSFET and monolithic integrated circuit chips in the late 1950s.
