The Colosseum is a huge, oval building in the center of Rome, Italy.

Building such a giant structure required many different materials. Builders used travertine limestone, volcanic rock called tuff, and brick-faced concrete.
History began with the Flavian dynasty of Roman emperors. Emperor Vespasian started the construction around 72 AD. His son and heir, Titus, finished the work in AD 80.
Over many centuries, the Colosseum faced many hard jobs. A major fire in 217 AD destroyed the wooden upper levels.
Today, the Colosseum is a famous symbol of Imperial Rome. It is listed as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.
The Colosseum is a massive elliptical amphitheatre located in the center of Rome, Italy.

To build such a monumental structure, Roman engineers utilized a variety of durable materials. The primary framework consisted of travertine limestone and tuff, which is a type of volcanic rock. Builders also used brick-faced Roman concrete to ensure the massive walls could support immense weight.
The Colosseum was the center for many different types of public events. Spectators gathered to watch gladiatorial contests and various public spectacles. These shows included animal hunts and the re-enactment of famous battles. Some performances featured dramas based on Roman mythology. Remarkably, the arena was even used for brief mock sea battles.
The history of the building is tied to the Flavian dynasty of emperors. Construction began under Emperor Vespasian around 72 AD. His successor and heir, Titus, completed the main structure in AD 80.
The site itself has a complex past before the amphitheatre existed. The area was once a densely inhabited valley between three hills. Following the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD, Emperor Nero seized the land. He built his massive palace, the Domus Aurea, on this site. He even created an artificial lake and placed a giant bronze statue of himself nearby. This statue, the Colossus of Nero, was modeled after the Colossus of Rhodes. It is believed the name "Colosseum" actually comes from this nearby "colossal" statue.
Over the centuries, the Colosseum underwent many radical changes in use. After entertainment ceased in the early medieval era, it served many different roles. People used the structure for housing, workshops, and even as a fortress. It functioned as a quarry where stone was taken for other projects. Some people used the vaulted spaces as quarters for a religious order.
Despite these many struggles, the Colosseum remains a powerful symbol of Imperial Rome. It is recognized as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.
