They want to trade or live there. This is called colonization.

In the past, many groups did this. The Romans built cities in Europe. Some cities are still there today.

Later, people from Europe moved far away. They went to places like the Americas. They also went to Africa and Asia.

This was often very unfair. The people already living there were treated poorly. Many groups lost their way of life.

Today, many lands are free. They are no longer ruled by others.

Later, the Vikings traveled from Scandinavia. They built settlements in Iceland and Greenland. They even tried to settle in Canada.

During the Colonial Era, many European countries grew very large. Spain, France, and England took control of many lands. They moved into the Americas, Africa, and Asia. This was often done to gain wealth through trade.

In the 1900s, the Soviet Union also used colonization. They moved many people into new areas. In the Baltic states, this was very hard for local people. Many were moved or lost their homes.

Colonization is a way that one group of people takes control over new areas or other people.

Colonisation 1550.png
Colonisation 1550.png
This often happens so a foreign group can trade or grow crops. Sometimes, people move there to live permanently in a new place. This process creates a split between the people moving in and the people already living there. The group in control is often called the colonizer. The people living in the area being taken over are called the colonizee.

There are different ways this happens in history. In settler colonization, a smaller group of people moves in to rule. They might try to make the local people act like them. Other times, they might push the original people away or take their land. This can happen through many births and new people moving in. Some groups even use laws to help them take control. For example, the United States once used an idea called manifest destiny to grow.

Colonization has been happening for a very long time. In ancient times, Greek and Phoenician groups built colonies near the Mediterranean Sea. Later, the Roman Empire conquered large parts of Europe, North Africa, and West Asia. Many famous cities actually started as Roman colonies. London in England and Cologne in Germany are two such examples. During the Middle Ages, the Vikings also traveled far to find new homes. They built settlements in Iceland and Greenland. They even tried to settle in a place they called Vinland in Canada.

During the Colonial Era, many Western European countries grew very powerful. Between the years 1500 and 1900, countries like Spain, Portugal, and France were very active. Other nations included England, the Netherlands, and the Russian Empire. These countries took control of lands in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. They often did this to gain wealth through world trade. Some people moved to places like Massachusetts to find religious freedom. Others moved to places like Newfoundland to find economic opportunities.

In the 20th century, the Soviet Union also used colonization methods. They moved many people into different areas to change how those places worked. In the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, this was very difficult for the local people. Many people were killed or forced to leave their homes during Soviet occupations.

In some places, the local languages were even banned. Over time, many nations have worked hard to gain their independence and freedom.

Colonization is the process of establishing control over new areas or peoples. Foreign groups do this to advance their trade, cultivation, or exploitation. Sometimes, colonization also involves people moving to a new place to live permanently. This process creates a clear distinction between the colonizers and the colonizees. The colonizers are the people or groups in control. The colonizees are the people living in the area being controlled.

There are different ways that colonization functions. One method is settler colonialism. In this type, a minority group rules over the existing inhabitants. They may do this through assimilation or through oppression. Some settler groups become a demographic majority by displacing or killing the original people. This happens through constant immigration and new births. Another method is through the use of a metropole. A metropole is the parent country that maintains a connection to the colony. Even if settlers rule directly, the metropole often maintains control through their activities.

Colonization can also involve cultural changes. One tool used is linguistic imperialism. This is when a colonial language is used for government and public life. This often happens to the exclusion of the local, indigenous languages. This can be used to absorb foreign people into the culture of the imperial country. In some cases, the government functions are organized for the convenience of the parent state. These decisions are often made based on economic interest rather than the needs of the local residents.

Colonization has a very long history in the world. In the classical period, maritime nations like Greece and Phoenicia established colonies in the Mediterranean. Later, the Roman Empire conquered large parts of Western Europe, North Africa, and West Asia. Many modern cities began as Roman colonies. For example, London was founded as Londinium. Cologne, Germany, was originally called Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium.

During the Middle Ages, large movements of people created new colonies. The decline of the Roman Empire was partly caused by nomadic groups like the Huns moving into Europe. This forced other groups, like the Goths, to move into Roman lands. This era saw the rise of the Franks in France and the Anglo-Saxons in England. The Vikings also practiced colonization. They moved from Scandinavia to establish colonies in Iceland and Greenland. They even attempted to settle in Vinland, which is likely located in Canada.

In the Colonial Era, Western European countries became very active. Between 1500 and 1900, many nations held great power in world trade. These included Spain, Portugal, France, and the Netherlands. The Kingdom of England and the Russian Empire were also major players. They established control over lands in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Some people moved to places like Massachusetts for religious freedom. Others sought economic opportunities in places like Newfoundland.

In the 20th century, the Soviet Union used colonial methods in different ways. In the 1920s, they used a policy called korenization to build trust with non-Russians. However, by the 1930s, they shifted toward Russification. This involved allowing people to join Russian culture voluntarily. In places like Abkhazia, the government merged smaller nations into larger ones. They changed alphabets and replaced local schools with Russian-based ones. This changed the social and political structure of the region.

In the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, colonization was very difficult. After 1944, large numbers of ethnic Russians were settled in these countries. Local languages, customs, and religions were often suppressed. This period involved mass executions and deportations. It is estimated that 605,000 inhabitants of these three countries were killed or deported. Many people also lost their properties to arriving colonists.
