The climate is a tropical rainforest climate, which means it stays hot all year. Heavy rains occur during two monsoon seasons. These seasons run from April to June and from September to November.

Etymology refers to the study of the origins of words. The name 'Colombo' was first introduced by Portuguese explorers in 1505. It likely comes from the Sinhala name Kolon thota, meaning "port on the river Kelani." Another theory suggests it comes from Kola-amba-thota, meaning "Harbour with leafy/green mango trees." Some believe the name relates to the indigenous Vedda word kolamba, meaning fort or harbour. This linguistic history shows the many cultures that have touched the region.

The history of Colombo involves several colonial powers. Arab traders settled there around the eighth century AD to control trade. In 1505, Portuguese explorers arrived under Dom Lourenço de Almeida. They signed a treaty with King Parakramabahu VIII to trade in cinnamon. The Portuguese built a fort in 1517 and eventually made Colombo their capital.

The British era changed the physical structure of the city. They captured Colombo in 1796 and made it a capital in 1815. Unlike previous rulers, the British built civilian structures around the fort. This expansion created the modern City of Colombo. In 1865, the British established a Municipal Council to train locals in self-governance.
