This started in 2003 to give fans more ways to stay. The festival is now held over two weekends in April. Each weekend lasts for three days. The same group of artists performs each weekend for the fans.

The idea for the festival grew from a single concert. In 1993, the rock band Pearl Jam played at the polo club.

They chose this spot because they did not want to play in Los Angeles. That show proved the site could host huge crowds. Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen later decided to start a festival there. They wanted to find trendy artists to attract many people. They even handed out pamphlets at other festivals to pitch their sunny desert idea.

The first official Coachella festival happened in October 1999.

It takes place at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. This location sits within the Colorado Desert. The festival serves as a premier destination for diverse musical genres. These include rock, pop, indie, hip hop, and electronic dance music. Beyond music, the grounds feature large-scale art installations and sculptures.

It is recognized as one of the largest and most profitable festivals globally.

To understand how the festival functions, one must look at its multi-stage structure. Several different stages are spread across the polo grounds. These stages host live musical performances continuously throughout the event.

Since 2003, the festival has also offered on-site camping. This allows fans to stay directly on the grounds in designated spots. The event is now organized into two consecutive three-day weekends in April. Each weekend features the exact same lineup of performing artists.

The festival has grown through several distinct stages of expansion. It began as a two-day event in October 1999. In 2000, no festival was held due to market conditions. The event returned in 2001 as a single-day festival. By 2002, organizers reverted to a two-day format. In 2007, the festival expanded to include a third day. Finally, in 2012, the organizers added a second weekend. This structure allows the festival to accommodate much larger crowds. The festival was only paused in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The history of Coachella traces back to a specific concert in 1993.

The rock band Pearl Jam performed at the Empire Polo Club for nearly 25,000 fans. They chose this venue because they were boycotting certain Los Angeles venues. This performance proved the site could handle large-scale events. Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen later used this realization to plan a festival. Tollett wanted to book trendy artists rather than just radio hits. He even pitched the idea at the Glastonbury Festival using pamphlets. He highlighted the sunny desert climate as a benefit compared to muddy English festivals.

Financial challenges shaped the early years of the festival. The inaugural 1999 event lost $850,000, which nearly ended the company Goldenvoice. To survive, many headlining artists agreed to receive deferred compensation. In 2001, Tollett sold Goldenvoice to the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) for $7 million. This acquisition provided the stability needed for future growth. The festival's success eventually led to new ventures. In 2007, Goldenvoice launched the Stagecoach country music festival at the same site. This shows how one successful event can create a whole ecosystem of music.

The scale of Coachella is reflected in its massive attendance and revenue. The 2017 festival was attended by 250,000 people. That same year, the event grossed $114.6 million. Between 2013 and 2015, the festival set new records for both attendance and gross revenue. Some performances have also become legendary in music history.

Björk's appearance in 2007 helped elevate the festival's international stature. These moments help define the cultural impact of the event.

Coachella connects various elements of modern culture and industry. It brings together musicians, visual artists, and large-scale event planners. The festival also impacts the local economy of the Indio area. It serves as a model for how music festivals can be managed with high-comfort features. For example, organizers provide misting tents and water fountains to combat desert heat.

It also demonstrates how digital and physical art can coexist in a single space. By blending these elements, Coachella has become a global benchmark for the live entertainment industry.
