The era's timeline is often marked by specific cultural milestones. Historians frequently use the earliest recorded Epic Greek poetry by Homer to mark the beginning. Homer is believed to have lived during the 8th or 7th centuries BC. Another significant date is 776 BC, when the Ancient Olympic Games were traditionally established. The era concludes with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD. This long span of history covers many different cultures and distinct time periods.

During the early Archaic period, several distinct groups shaped the Mediterranean. The Phoenicians expanded from Canaan to dominate Mediterranean trade by the 8th century BC. Carthage was founded in 814 BC and established strongholds in Sicily, Italy, and Sardinia by 700 BC. In Greece, the Archaic period followed the Dark Ages. This time saw the revitalization of written language and the rise of political theory. It also saw the beginnings of democracy, philosophy, and theater.

Artistic styles also evolved significantly during these early stages. Greek pottery moved from a geometric style to an Orientalizing style. This new style included influences from Egypt, Phoenicia, and Syria. Later, artists developed black-figure pottery in Corinth during the 7th century BC. By about 530 BC, the Andokides Painter helped develop the red-figure style. In Italy, the Etruscans held political control through the late 7th century BC. They formed an aristocratic and monarchial elite before losing power in the late 6th century BC.

The development of Rome provides a clear example of political change. Legend says Romulus and Remus founded Rome on April 21, 753 BC. Archaeological evidence shows the first settlements at the Roman Forum in the mid-8th century BC. Rome was originally ruled by kings, such as the Etruscan Tarquinius Superbus. However, the people expelled the monarchy in 510 BC. In 509 BC, the Senate voted to establish a republican government. This new system ensured that no single king would ever rule Rome again.

As the classical period progressed, Greek city-states experienced intense conflict. The Greco-Persian Wars lasted from 499 to 449 BC. These wars resulted in the dominance of Athens within the Delian League.

This dominance eventually led to the Peloponnesian War between 431 and 404 BC. Following this, Sparta held power for a time, but they lost naval supremacy by 395 BC. Eventually, the power of Macedon rose. Alexander the Great expanded Macedonian power to include the Persian Empire, Egypt, and lands near India.

The Romans played a vital role in preserving and spreading Greek culture. They became patrons and imitators of Hellenistic science, philosophy, and art. This created a bilingual culture where both Greek and Latin were used. The Roman imperial period saw this Greco-Latin system reach its final shape. It included Greek elements like rhetoric, poetry, and historiography.

The legacy of classical antiquity remains deeply embedded in the modern world. Its foundations influenced law, politics, science, and architecture. It also shaped ethics, literature, and educational systems. Fragments of this culture helped spark the Renaissance in the 14th century. Later, neo-classical revivals occurred during the 18th and 19th centuries. The era remains a subject of study because of its immense impact on Western civilization.
