He then established Birdseye Seafoods Inc. to freeze fish fillets using chilled air at -43 °C (-45 °F). After his first company went bankrupt in 1924, he developed a new process. He began packing fish in cartons and freezing them between two refrigerated surfaces under pressure. This made the process much more viable for large-scale production.
His most significant industrial contribution was the double belt freezer. This machine was marketed by the General Seafood Corporation in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The device used cold brine to chill two stainless steel belts. These belts carried packaged fish through the cold to freeze them quickly. Birdseye received US Patent #1,773,079 for this invention. This patent is often considered the start of the commercial frozen fresh foods market. In 1927, he also patented a multiplate freezing machine, which became a standard for decades.
In 1929, Birdseye sold his company and patents to Goldman Sachs and the Postum Company. The Postum Company later became the General Foods Corporation. The sale was significant because Marjorie Merriweather Post, the owner, offered him $22 million. In modern terms, this is approximately $335 million in 2021 dollars. Post was inspired by the quality of the food after eating a frozen turkey on her yacht. This led to the creation of the Birds Eye Frozen Food Company.
Retail frozen foods truly began in 1930 during sales experiments in Springfield, Massachusetts. The company tested 26 different items in 18 retail stores. The initial product line was quite diverse. It included 18 cuts of frozen meat, spinach, peas, various fruits, berries, blue point oysters, and fish fillets. Consumers responded very positively to these products. This success established the foundation for the frozen food aisles we see in grocery stores today. The "Birds Eye" name remains a major brand in the industry.
Throughout his life, Birdseye received several honors for his scientific and industrial achievements. In 1949, he was awarded the Babcock-Hart Award from the Institute of Food Technologists. His lasting impact on science and industry was recognized again in 2005 when he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Birdseye passed away on October 7, 1956, at the age of 69. His ashes were scattered in the sea off the coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts, near where his industrial work flourished.
