Ciudad Guayana is a major city located in Bolívar State, Venezuela. It is a strategic urban center built at the confluence of two massive rivers. The Orinoco River and the Caroní River meet at this high plain. This plain sits approximately 200 to 300 feet above sea level. The city is divided by the Caroní River, which flows from south to north. To the east of this river lies the old town of San Félix. To the west is the newer, planned area of Puerto Ordaz.

The geography of the region creates a unique visual phenomenon. Where the two rivers join, they show a very distinct demarcation line. This happens because the Orinoco and Caroní rivers have different colors. The climate in Ciudad Guayana is tropical savanna. It is hot and humid for most of the year. There is a specific dry season that lasts from January to March. The city contains beautiful natural sites like Llovizna Falls and Cachamay Falls.

The economy of Ciudad Guayana is driven by heavy industry and energy. It is one of Venezuela's most vital shipping locations. Ships and barges use the Orinoco River to access the Atlantic Ocean. The city is a hub for iron, steel, and aluminum production. Several major companies operate here, including Sidor for steel and Ferrominera for iron ore. Aluminum manufacturing is also a huge part of the local economy. Companies like Alcasa, Venalum, and Bauxilum are all part of this industrial network.

Electricity is another massive part of the city's identity. The headquarters for CVG Edelca, the main electricity producer, are located here. This organization manages several hydroelectric power plants along the Caroní River basin. Two of these plants, Macagua and Caruachi, are located within the city limits. The Macagua complex includes a public park and a museum. Further upstream, the company manages the Tocoma and Guri dams. The Guri station is the fourth-largest hydroelectric station in the world by capacity. It also created the Guri reservoir, Venezuela's second-largest lake.

The history of the region is marked by many attempts at settlement. Explorers like Diego de Ordaz first investigated the area in 1531. Later, Antonio de Berrio founded Santo Tome de Guayana in 1591. However, the city was destroyed many times by pirates and conquerors. These groups traveled down the Orinoco River searching for the mythical El Dorado. In 1618, an English expedition led by Walter Raleigh sacked the city. By 1764, residents had to move to Angostura to avoid further attacks. The modern version of the city was finally founded on July 2, 1961.

Because it was a planned city, Ciudad Guayana feels different from other South American cities. The design was influenced by the Harvard–MIT Joint Center for Urban Studies. In the 1960s and 1970s, the American company US Steel operated in the region. They built housing for hundreds of American immigrant workers in Puerto Ordaz. This left a lasting impact on the local architecture and landscaping. Many neighborhoods look like American suburbs from the 1950s through the 1980s. You can see this in the manicured lawns and neatly paved sidewalks.

Transportation and infrastructure connect the various parts of the city. There are three bridges crossing the Caroní River. The Orinoquia Bridge crosses the Orinoco River and opened in 2006. This bridge is the second largest in Venezuela. It helps people travel to the Anzoátegui and Monagas states. The city is also served by the Manuel Carlos Piar International Airport. Major avenues like Guayana Avenue run through the heart of the city. These roads connect industrial zones, residential areas, and schools. The city continues to grow and was prepared to house 2.5 million people by 2020.
