The water goes over Churchill Falls. Most of the water now goes through a plant. This plant makes power from the water. This is called hydroelectric power. The plant can make 5,428 MW of power. Other plants may be built soon. This will make even more power. The river is a very busy place for making power.

This river is the longest in Atlantic Canada. It flows east from the Smallwood Reservoir. The water travels through Lake Melville before it reaches the Atlantic Ocean. It is a huge part of the land in this region.

The river follows a curved path through the land. It starts by flowing north from Ashuanipi Lake. The water moves across the Labrador Plateau, which is shaped like a saucer.

Many different groups have names for this river. The Labrador Innu call it the Grand River. The Central Innu call it the Churchill Falls River. Other groups, like the NunatuKavummiut and Nunatsiavummiut, call it the Big River. In 1821, Captain William Martin gave it a new name. He named it after Charles Hamilton. Later, in 1965, Joey Smallwood renamed it the Churchill River. He chose this name to honor Winston Churchill.

The river is very important for making electricity. This is done through a big hydroelectric project at Churchill Falls. Most of the water that used to fall over the falls is now moved underground. This water goes through a giant power plant. This plant can make 5,428 MW of power. More plants might be built to reach over 9,200 MW. This project has caused some disagreements between the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec.

People have long been interested in this river. In 1894, people even had picnics on the water.

In 2012, divers used special tools to look deep underwater. They thought they found a sunken U-boat near Muskrat Falls. This was a local legend, but records make it seem unlikely. Today, some people want to change the name back to Grand River or an Innu name. The river remains a very important place for nature and power.

The water moves over Churchill Falls and through many rapids.

Many different groups have historically used different names for this river. The Labrador Innu call it the Grand River. The Central Innu refer to it as the Churchill Falls River. The NunatuKavummiut and Nunatsiavummiut call it Kuunga-angijuk, which means the Big River. In 1821, Captain William Martin renamed the river after Charles Hamilton. He was the commodore-governor of Newfoundland at that time. Later, on February 1, 1965, Premier Joey Smallwood changed the name again. He named it the Churchill River to honor Winston Churchill. This change happened before construction began on a major hydroelectric project.

Today, the river is a massive source of hydroelectric power. This is power made from moving water. The Churchill Falls site is a very large project. It has diverted almost all of the water that used to fall over the falls. Instead, the water is moved through a giant hydroelectric power generating plant. This plant is located underground. Currently, the project has a capacity of 5,428 MW. This stands for megawatts, which is a unit used to measure power. Other planned plants could bring the total capacity to over 9,200 MW.

The management of this power has caused tension between provinces. Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec have had disagreements over the river. Newfoundland and Labrador claims that Quebec's Hydro-Québec takes too much profit. Hydro-Québec provided much of the financing for the project. They also provide access to the North American power grid. However, Quebec still buys power from the dam. They use rates set in a power purchase agreement from 1969. This agreement is a legal contract about how much power is bought and sold.

There are also interesting stories and legends regarding the river. In 2012, divers used side scan sonar to search the water. They were looking for the wreck of a U-boat. A U-boat is a type of submarine used in past wars. They searched just downstream from Muskrat Falls. This search was meant to test a local legend. The legend said that Nazi submarines traveled far inland. The sonar images were quite grainy and hard to see. Historical records suggest that finding a U-boat there is unlikely.

The river continues to be a subject of discussion today. In 2022, MHA Perry Trimper spoke about the river's name. He called for the name to be changed. He suggested using the name Grand River or an Innu name instead. This shows how important the history of the river remains to people. The river connects the inland plateau to the Atlantic Ocean. It remains a powerful force in the geography of Canada.
