People build many kinds of buildings for Christian worship. These are called churches, chapels, or cathedrals.

Church architecture includes many different types of buildings. These include churches, chapels, convents, and seminaries.

Building a church can happen in many ways. A very simple church might just be one room. It uses materials found nearby, like mud brick or logs. In some African countries, these churches are even circular.

In the beginning, Christianity was not a legal religion. For the first three centuries, people worshipped in secret. They met in synagogues or in private houses. These were called house churches.
Everything changed in 312 AD after a battle. The Roman emperor Constantine helped make Christianity a legal religion. Architects began using Roman styles for these new buildings. They used the basilica style, which was a large hall.
Church buildings often connect to the history of the places around them. In Ravenna, many churches from the 5th and 6th centuries still stand. These include the Basilica of San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. Sometimes, people even turned old Roman temples into churches. The Pantheon in Rome is one such example. In the 20th century, builders started using new materials. They began using steel and concrete to design churches.
Church architecture refers to the design and construction of Christian buildings. This category includes churches, chapels, convents, and seminaries.
Building a church can follow a very simple or very complex process. The simplest version consists of a single meeting space. These use locally available materials like mud brick, wattle and daub, or split logs. In some African regions, these churches are even circular to match local housing styles.

In the first three centuries of Christianity, the religion was illegal. Because of this, few dedicated buildings were constructed. Early Christians worshipped in synagogues or private homes. These domestic spaces were known as house churches.
Everything changed in 312 AD following the Battle of Milvian Bridge. The Roman emperor Constantine made Christianity a lawful and privileged religion. This shift allowed architecture to express the faith through large-scale building projects. Architects used Roman civic and imperial forms as their primary models. They mastered these existing styles to create new Christian spaces. One major model was the Aula regia, an imperial audience hall with a throne apse.
A typical Christian basilica features a high central nave. This central space is flanked by two or more lower longitudinal aisles. Many designs also include galleries and clerestories, which are high windows that let in light. While pagan basilicas often focused on statues of the emperor, Christian basilicas focused on the altar. Most Christian basilicas also include a single apse. The apse is a semi-circular recess at one end of the building. This is where the bishop and presbyters sit on a raised platform called a dais. Some churches also used central plans, such as circular rotundas or polygonal shapes.
History shows that many buildings have changed roles over time. In Rome, some early churches were built directly over former houses. Others were built on sites of martyrdom or near catacombs.
Church architecture connects to many broader fields, including technology and sociology. In the 20th century, the introduction of steel and concrete changed how churches were designed.
