Chubby Checker is a celebrated American rock and roll singer and dancer.
Checker's journey began with a foundation in music and performance. Born Ernest Evans on October 3, 1941, in Spring Gully, South Carolina, he later moved to South Philadelphia. He lived there with his parents, Raymond and Eartle Evans, and his two brothers. By age 11, he had already formed a street-corner harmony group. He later studied piano at the Settlement Music School. To entertain his classmates at South Philadelphia High School, he performed vocal impressions of stars like Elvis Presley and Fats Domino.
His professional nickname came from his early jobs in local markets. While working at a produce market, his boss, Anthony Tambone, called him "Chubby." His talent caught the attention of Henry Colt, an owner at Fresh Farm Poultry. Colt and songwriter Kal Mann arranged a private recording for Dick Clark, the host of American Bandstand. After hearing Checker imitate Fats Domino, Clark's wife, Barbara, suggested the stage name Chubby Checker. This led to his first official release, "The Class," which reached number 38 in 1959.
Checker's career reached new heights through his mastery of dance hits. In July 1960, he introduced his version of "The Twist" at the Rainbow Club in Wildwood, New Jersey. While the song was originally a rhythm and blues track by Hank Ballard & The Midnighters, Checker's version became a massive success. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1960 and again in 1961. This second run was driven by older audiences after he performed on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Throughout the early 1960s, Checker released a steady stream of successful dance tracks. He won a Grammy Award for Best Rock and Roll Recording for "Let's Twist Again" in 1962. Other notable hits included "Pony Time," which became his second number one single, and "Limbo Rock." By 1965, "The Twist" had sold more than 15 million copies and earned multiple gold discs. Even though he had many hits, Checker sometimes felt that critics only saw him as a dance demonstrator rather than a talented singer.

His lasting legacy is recognized by many prestigious musical institutions. In 2014, he was inducted into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. He has also been selected for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2025.
