Chrysler liked to try new things. In 1955, they made a radio using transistors. Transistors are tiny parts that help electronics work.
The company had some hard years. They faced many rules about safety and pollution. They almost ran out of money in the 1970s. The U.S. government gave them loans to help. A leader named Lee Iacocca helped the company make money again. Now, Chrysler is part of a large group called Stellantis. It is still one of the "Big Three" car makers in the U.S.
Chrysler is one of the "Big Three" car makers in the United States.

In the early days, the company worked hard to build better cars. Walter Chrysler wanted his cars to be strong and affordable. In 1924, he launched the Chrysler Six. This car had parts that most other cars did not have yet. It used an oil filter and a special air filter for the carburetor. It also used "Floating Power," which were rubber mounts to stop shaking.
Walter Chrysler started the company on June 6, 1925. He used what he learned at General Motors to build his business. He reorganized the Maxwell Motor Company to create the new Chrysler Corporation. In 1928, he grew the company by buying the Dodge Brothers Company. He also started the Plymouth and DeSoto brands that same year. He wanted to have different cars for different budgets. This helped the company reach many different kinds of drivers.
Chrysler often tried new technology to stay ahead. In 1955, they worked with Philco to make the first all-transistor car radio.
Many things you see on the road today come from Chrysler's history. If you see a Jeep, you are seeing a brand Chrysler gained in 1987. When you see a Dodge, you are seeing a brand they bought long ago. The company has changed many times through mergers and new owners. It moved from being a single company to being part of Stellantis in 2021. Even with all these changes, the name Chrysler remains a huge part of American history.
Chrysler is one of the "Big Three" automobile manufacturers in the United States.
The company began on June 6, 1925. Walter Chrysler founded the Chrysler Corporation by reorganizing the Maxwell Motor Company. He used a strategy of brand diversification learned at General Motors. This meant offering different car brands for different types of buyers. In 1928, he acquired the Dodge Brothers Company. He also created the Plymouth and DeSoto brands to reach more people.
Chrysler was known for introducing advanced engineering to the public. The 1924 Chrysler Six was a major breakthrough. It featured a carburetor air filter and a high compression engine. It also used full pressure lubrication and an oil filter. These parts were rare in most automobiles at that time. Chrysler also developed the first practical mass-produced four-wheel hydraulic brakes. They also created "Floating Power," which used rubber engine mounts to reduce vibration. Another invention was a ridged rim for wheels. This design prevented deflated tires from flying off the wheel. This specific wheel design was eventually used by the entire auto industry.
Throughout its history, Chrysler experimented with cutting-edge technology. In 1955, Chrysler and Philco produced the world's first all-transistor car radio.
The company faced several difficult eras due to market changes. In the 1970s, Chrysler struggled with new safety and environmental regulations. The 1973 oil crisis also shifted consumer interest toward smaller cars. Chrysler lacked the financial resources to fight rising import competition. By the late 1970s, the company was near bankruptcy. The U.S. government provided $1.5 billion in loan guarantees to save it. New CEO Lee Iacocca helped return the company to profitability in the 1980s. In 1987, Chrysler acquired American Motors Corporation (AMC). This acquisition brought the profitable Jeep brand under Chrysler's control.
Chrysler has undergone many complex corporate changes and mergers. In 1998, it merged with the German company Daimler-Benz. This created DaimlerChrysler AG, though the merger was often contentious. In 2007, Chrysler was sold to Cerberus Capital Management. The company then faced the automotive crisis of 2008–2010. Chrysler filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization on April 30, 2009. This process involved negotiating with many different creditors. It also included a bailout through the Troubled Asset Relief Program.
Ownership shifted again as Fiat S.p.A. gradually acquired more shares. In 2014, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) was established through a merger. Chrysler Group LLC became a subsidiary of this new entity. In January 2021, a massive merger occurred between FCA and the PSA Group. This merger created the Stellantis Group. As a result, Chrysler is now a part of this multinational corporation. The history of Chrysler shows how a single company can evolve through many different global partnerships. It remains a central part of the American automotive story.
