They lived in the fertile Kaveri River valley. This land was very good for growing food. For a long time, they were one of three great kings in the region. The other two groups were the Chera and the Pandya. The Cholas were known for their strength and their many different names. Some names, like Valavan, meant they ruled a fertile country.

History tells us about the Cholas in several different stages. First came the Early Cholas mentioned in ancient Tamil literature. These stories tell of kings and poets from a long time ago. There was a time of change when the Cholas lost much of their power. During this time, other groups like the Kalabhras and Pallavas ruled the land. Some Chola families moved to the Telugu country to live as chieftains. They waited for many years to become independent rulers again.

Kings like Aditya I and Parantaka I helped the empire expand. They won battles against groups like the Pallavas and the Pandyas. This helped the Cholas become a powerhouse in South Asia. They became very important for trade and culture in the region.

Historians divide Chola history into four distinct periods. The first era consists of the Early Cholas found in Sangam literature. This literature dates from before the common era to the early common era. The second period is an interregnum, or a gap in power. During this time, the Kalabhra dynasty displaced the existing kingdoms. The third period is the dynasty of Vijayalaya, which began around 848 CE. Finally, the Later Chola dynasty emerged under Kulothunga Chola I in the 11th century.

Early Chola history is preserved through ancient Tamil literature and oral traditions. The Sangam literature records the names of kings, princes, and poets. It also contains legends about mythical rulers like King Kantaman. Legend says his devotion brought the Kaveri River into existence. Tangible evidence also mentions kings like Karikala and Kocengannan. One historical account, the Mahavamsa, describes a Chola prince named Ellalan. He reportedly invaded the Rajarata kingdom in Sri Lanka in 235 BCE.

During the interregnum, the Cholas lost their dominance in the Tamil country. The Kalabhra and Pallava dynasties rose to power during these centuries. Many Cholas migrated to the Telugu country to serve as chieftains. These families, such as the Renati and Nellore Cholas, claimed descent from Karikala. They lived under the shadow of more successful rivals like the Pandyas. However, the Cholas maintained a high reputation through marriage alliances. This period of waiting ended when Vijayalaya re-established the dynasty in 848 CE.

The Imperial Chola era transformed the dynasty into a global powerhouse. Vijayalaya founded the empire, and his successors expanded its reach significantly. King Aditya I defeated the Pallava and Pandyan dynasties in the 10th century. His son, Parantaka I, defeated the Rashtrakuta dynasty at the battle of Vallala. The empire reached its absolute zenith under Rajaraja I and Rajendra I. These leaders created an influential empire that controlled much of the Bay of Bengal.

Rajendra I achieved remarkable military and diplomatic successes. He conquered Odisha and the Pala dynasty of Bengal. His armies even reached the Ganges River in northern India. To celebrate these northern victories, he built the capital Gangaikonda Cholapuram. His influence extended across the sea to the Srivijaya kingdom in Southeast Asia. The Cholas also engaged in international diplomacy with China. They sent three separate diplomatic missions to China in 1016, 1033, and 1077.

The Cholas were also great builders and artists. They constructed massive stone structures like the Brihadisvara Temple in Thanjavur.

Political shifts eventually led to the end of Chola rule. The empire faced constant warfare with the Western Chalukyas and the Pandyas. Between 1150 and 1280, the Pandya dynasty became their strongest opponent. The Cholas remained stable until 1215 CE. After this, the Pandyan empire absorbed their territories. The dynasty finally ceased to exist by 1279. Their legacy remains through their art, architecture, and historical influence in Asia.
