As a teacher, Chiron mentored many famous heroes and even gods.

Chiron was a unique and highly respected figure in Greek mythology.
Chiron's extraordinary intelligence and skills were the result of divine mentorship. After being found by the god Apollo, Chiron was trained in many complex arts. Apollo taught him medicine, music, archery, hunting, gymnastics, and prophecy. The goddess Artemis also provided training in archery and hunting. Because of this education, Chiron became a master of many disciplines. He is specifically credited with the discovery of botany and pharmacy. This means he understood the science of using herbs and plants for medicinal purposes.
His origins were fundamentally different from the other centaurs. Most centaurs were born from Ixion and a cloud named Nephele. In contrast, Chiron was the son of the Titan Cronus and the Oceanid Philyra. Some myths suggest Cronus took the form of a horse to impregnate Philyra. Because of his parentage, Chiron was not directly related to the wilder centaurs. This distinction helped explain his calm and civilized temperament. After his birth, Philyra left him due to shame, leaving him to be raised by the gods.
Chiron lived primarily on Mount Pelion, where he established a home and family. He married the nymph Chariclo and fathered several children. His daughters were named Hippe, Endeïs, and Ocyrhoe, and his son was named Carystus. Some sources offer different names for his wife or his son, such as Nais or Aristaeus. Although the Lapithae eventually expelled the centaurs from their homes, Chiron remained a figure of great respect. In the Magnesian region, people even offered sacrifices to him. Some believed his descendants were the Cheironidae, a family famous for their medical knowledge.
As a mentor, Chiron shaped the lives of many legendary figures. He was a renowned tutor to various culture heroes and even gods. One of his most famous pupils was Achilles, the son of Peleus and Thetis. Chiron provided Achilles with a specialized diet, including the marrow of bears and the innards of lions. He also taught the hero Jason, the leader of the Argonauts. Other notable students included Asclepius, who became the god of doctors, and the god Dionysus.
Chiron's life was deeply intertwined with the stories of other major mythological figures. He played a vital role in the life of Peleus, the grandfather of Achilles. Chiron saved Peleus from being killed by a band of murderous centaurs. He also helped Peleus by explaining how to capture the nymph Thetis for marriage.
Even Chiron's death is described as a noble and selfless act. Because he was the son of a Titan, he was naturally immortal and could not die a normal death. However, he was eventually wounded by an injury that could not be cured. To end his suffering, Chiron chose to willingly relinquish his immortality. This decision allowed Zeus to release the Titan Prometheus from his own punishment. Through this sacrifice, Chiron's legacy transitioned from a living teacher to an eternal symbol of wisdom and kindness.
