The climate on Chios is categorized as temperate Mediterranean. The surrounding sea has a stabilizing effect on the weather. This means there is modest variation in temperature throughout the year. Summer temperatures average a high of 30°C. In January, the average low is around 10°C. However, temperatures can sometimes drop below freezing or rise above 40°C. The island experiences steady breezes all year. These winds are often northerly, known as the Etesian or Meltemi. They can also be southwesterly, known as the Sirocco.

Chios is famous for the production of mastic gum. This specialty has earned the island the nickname "the Mastic Island." In the southern region, there are seven specific villages called the Mastichochoria. These villages include Mesta, Pyrgi, Olympi, Kalamoti, Vessa, Lithi, and Elata. These settlements have controlled mastic production since the Roman period. The villages were built between the 14th and 16th centuries. They feature narrow streets and fortified gates. Chios has been ruled by many different powers over the centuries. In antiquity, it was known as Ophioussa or Pityoussa. During the Middle Ages, it was ruled by the Genoese and the Ottomans. The capital during those times was called Kastron. A very difficult period occurred during the Greek War of Independence in 1822. This event is known as the Chios massacre. During this time, tens of thousands of Greeks were killed, expelled, or enslaved by Ottoman troops.

Chios also offers unique geological and cultural connections. Near Pyrgi, a type of white dirt is found. In antiquity, this was known as Chian earth. It was used as a cosmetic and an astringent. The island's name may come from ancient legends. One story says Chios was the son of the god Poseidon. Another story attributes the name to a nymph named Chione. Even the suburb of Vrontados has famous connections. Some believe it is the birthplace of the poet Homer.
