Chinese Buddhism, also known as Han Buddhism, is a Sinicized form of Mahayana Buddhism. This means it is a version of Buddhism that has been shaped by Chinese culture. It is the largest institutionalized religion in mainland China. Experts estimate there are between 42 and 53 million Buddhists in the People's Republic of China.

The religion arrived in China during the Han dynasty, which lasted from 206 BCE to 220 CE. Missionaries brought these ideas through the Silk Road. This included both overland routes through Central Asia and maritime routes across the sea.
As the religion grew, several distinct schools of thought emerged. Each school offered different ways to practice and understand the world. The Tiantai school was founded by the master Zhiyi and focuses on the Lotus Sutra. The Huayan school is based on the works of masters like Dushun and Fazang. The Pure Land tradition involves the veneration of Amitabha.

The Tang dynasty was a golden age for Chinese Buddhism. During this era, the religion spread across all social classes. Many emperors promoted the faith, including Empress Wu Zetian. She was a famous leader who supported the Longmen cave complexes.
However, the religion faced difficult times during certain periods of history. Between 841 and 845 CE, the Great Anti-Buddhist Persecution occurred under Emperor Wuzong. The state needed more tax revenue and wealth, which led to this crackdown.
Despite these challenges, Buddhism remained deeply influential in Chinese culture. During the Song dynasty, Chan Buddhism became the most dominant school. It had strong ties to the imperial government and an organized system of administration.
Today, Chinese Buddhism is considered highly syncretic. This means it has blended many different belief systems together. It draws heavily from Confucianism, Taoism, and Chinese folk religion.
