These gardens are very smart. Deep ditches stay between the beds. These ditches let plants reach water easily. This means crops do not need rain to grow! Farmers can harvest crops up to seven times a year. They grow corn, beans, squash, and colorful flowers.

Research into the soil reveals why these gardens are so healthy. A study by the National Polytechnic Institute looked at bacterial diversity in the soil. They found that cultivated chinampa soils had more abundant bacteria than non-cultivated soils. The researchers noted that chinampas act as a transition system between sediment and soil. They found interesting associations between the soil and iron-oxidizing bacteria. This biological diversity helps maintain the nutrients needed for constant planting. This complex relationship between water, mud, and bacteria makes the chinampa a unique ecosystem.
Today, remnants of this ancient system still exist in Mexico. You can find them in Xochimilco and towns like San Luis, Tlahuac, and Mixquic.
