This place has a long and changing history. Long ago, it was part of Zhuluo County. The name changed many times over the years. In 1787, the Qianlong Emperor gave it the name Chiayi. He did this to thank the people for being loyal.

Later, Japan ruled the area for a time. After Japan handed Taiwan to the Republic of China in 1945, the area changed again. In 1950, Chiayi County was officially established.

Chiayi is home to many different towns and cities. There are 2 cities and 13 rural townships. Taibao City is the seat of the county government.

The Chiayi County Council is located in Puzi City.

As of May 2022, about 490,423 people lived in the county. The population has been getting smaller since 2009. This is because more people are moving away. There are also many schools here for students to attend.

In 1704, the county seat was moved to Tsulosan, the site where Chiayi City stands today. In 1787, the Qianlong Emperor renamed the area Chiayi. He did this to honor the citizens for their loyalty during the Lin Shuangwen rebellion.

Later, the area was part of the Tainan Prefecture during Japanese rule from 1920. After the handover to the Republic of China in 1945, the land was briefly part of Tainan County. Chiayi County was officially established as its own entity in October 1950.

Administrative structures in the county have shifted over the decades. For a long time, Chiayi City served as the county seat. However, in December 1981, the government moved the seat to the Dongshiliao Farm in Taibao Township.

As Taibao grew, it was reorganized as Taibao City in 1991. The county government eventually moved again to Hsiangho New Village within Taibao City in November 1991. Today, the county is divided into various types of districts. These include two cities, two urban townships, 13 rural townships, and one mountain indigenous township. While Taibao City is the seat of government, the Chiayi County Council is located in Puzi City.

The natural environment of Chiayi County is a major draw for visitors. The county contains three distinct national scenic areas: Alishan, Southwest Coast, and Siraya.

These areas protect different ecosystems, ranging from high mountain forests to ocean views. Visitors can explore the Chukou Nature Center or the Haomeiliao Wetland. The county also manages large water resources through the Renyitan Dam and the Zengwen Dam. For those interested in culture, there are several museums. These include the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum and the National Radio Museum. The High-Heel Wedding Church is another unique building found in the region.

Economic development in Chiayi has faced certain challenges over the last 20 years. The county has often been left out of regional economic growth. This is due to a less strategic location and a lack of infrastructure. There has also been a shortage of appropriate industrial land to attract large manufacturers. Most existing industrial parks were built before 1981. Consequently, the development of class 2 and class 3 industries has been slow. This slow growth has led to sluggish urban development. To address this, the county is currently planning three new industrial parks: Dapumei, Ma Chou Hou, and Budai Intelligent Industrial Park.

Despite economic hurdles, the county plays a vital role in the national energy grid. Two major power plants are located within its borders. The Zengwen Hydroelectric Plant provides 50 MW of capacity. The Chiahui Gas-Fired Power Plant provides a much larger 670 MW.

Education is also a strong sector in the region. The county hosts government-owned institutions like National Chung Cheng University and National Chiayi University. There are also several private colleges, such as Chang Gung University of Science and Technology. These institutions help support the local population, which numbered 490,423 as of May 2022.

Transportation links make the county accessible to many people. Travelers can arrive via Chiayi Airport, which sits near the junction of Shuishang Township and Taibao City.

The Taiwan High Speed Rail serves the area through the Chiayi HSR Station in Taibao City. For local travel, the Taiwan Railway provides service to stations like Dalin and Minxiong. A special Alishan Forest Railway runs through Zhuqi and Meishan to reach the Alishan National Scenic Area. Finally, the Budai Harbor offers ferry services to Magong City in the Penghu islands, connecting the mainland to the sea.
