They sit between two rivers. These are the Yana and Indigirka rivers.

The mountains are very tall. They have many icy spots called glaciers.

Some parts of the mountains have lakes. The ridges block the wind. This helps change the weather in the land nearby.

It is a big and wild place.

The Chersky Range is a chain of mountains. It sits in northeastern Siberia. The mountains lie between the Yana and Indigirka rivers. Most of the range is in the Sakha Republic. A small part is in Magadan Oblast.

This mountain system has many parts. These are called subranges. One high peak is Peak Pobeda. It is part of the Ulakhan-Chistay Range. Some high areas have glaciers. These are large bodies of ice. There are about 350 glaciers in the system. You can also find lakes in the valleys.

The mountains affect the weather. The ridges block air that moves from the west. This can change how much snow falls on the plains. The area is also where the earth's plates meet. These plates are huge pieces of the Earth's crust. Because these plates move, the area has earthquakes. The mountains are a very important part of the land in Siberia.

The mountains are a very important part of the landscape. They help shape the climate of the whole region. The high ridges block air that moves in from the west. This can change how much snow falls on the plains nearby.

This mountain system is made of many smaller parts called subranges. These subranges run from the northwest toward the southeast. One very famous part is the Ulakhan-Chistay Range. This area contains Peak Pobeda, which is the highest peak in the whole range.

Some of the highest areas have glaciers. These are huge bodies of ice. There are about 350 glaciers in the system. You can also find lakes in the valleys. Some lakes are in swampy areas, while others were made by glaciers.

People have explored these mountains for a long time. A man named Poznik Ivanov traveled through this area between 1633 and 1642. He crossed the mountains to reach the Yana and Indigirka rivers. Later, the range was named after a Polish explorer named Ivan Chersky. The Russian Geographical Society gave it this name. In 1926, the son of Vladimir Obruchev sighted the range. This helped people learn more about these remote mountains.

There are many different rivers in this area. The mountains sit near the Yana, Indigirka, and Kolyma river basins. The Yana River covers the western and northwestern parts. The Indigirka River covers the central and northeastern parts. The Kolyma River covers the eastern and southern parts. These rivers carry water through many different subranges. Many of these subranges have their own special names, like the Burkat Range or the Dogdo Range.

The ground beneath the mountains is very active. The range sits on the boundary between two tectonic plates. These are the Eurasian and North American plates. Scientists study how these plates move against each other. Some believe the plates are pressing together in a suture zone. This movement makes the area seismically active, which means there can be earthquakes. The mountains are also part of a geologic triple junction. This is a place where different forces meet in the Earth's crust.

The Chersky Range is a massive mountain system located in northeastern Siberia. It sits between the Yana and Indigirka Rivers. Most of this territory belongs to the Sakha Republic. However, a small eastern section is part of the Magadan Oblast. This range is a vital part of the Siberian landscape. It acts as a major geographic barrier in the region.

The mountains are composed of many distinct subranges. These subranges generally run from the northwest toward the southeast. One major part is the Ulakhan-Chistay Range. This subrange contains Peak Pobeda, the highest point in the entire system. Other notable subranges include the Burkat, Khadaranya, and Ymiysky ranges. The system also contains the Elgi Plateau and the Yana Plateau.

Water plays a huge role in this mountain system. The range is divided into three main river basins. The Yana River basin covers the western and northwestern areas. The Indigirka River basin covers the central and northeastern parts. The Kolyma River basin covers the eastern and southern sections. These rivers include many named tributaries like the Adycha and the Nera. Some high ranges feature alpine relief with glaciers. There are roughly 350 glaciers throughout the system. You can also find lakes in swampy valleys or those of glacial origin, such as Emanda.

History shows that humans have navigated these rugged lands for centuries. Between 1633 and 1642, Poznik Ivanov traveled through this area. He climbed a tributary of the lower Lena and crossed the Verkhoyansk Range. He then crossed the Chersky Range to reach the Indigirka. In 1926, the son of Vladimir Obruchev sighted the range. The Russian Geographical Society later named it after Ivan Chersky. He was a famous Polish explorer and geographer.

The geology of the range is complex and still being studied. The mountains sit on the boundary of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. Scientists are researching the exact nature of this boundary. In the 1980s, experts thought the area was a zone of continental rifting. This means the crust was spreading apart. Now, many believe it is an active suture zone. A suture zone is a convergent plate boundary where plates press together. This compression makes the Chersky Range seismically active. This means the area experiences earthquakes.

The range also contains a geologic triple junction. This is a specific point where the Ulakhan Fault intersects the suture zone. The mountains connect to the Laptev Sea Rift in the north. This rift is a continental extension of the Mid-Arctic Gakkel Ridge. These tectonic forces help shape the high peaks and deep valleys. The movement of the plates is a primary driver of the local landscape.

Climate is another important feature of the Chersky Range. The mountains, along with the Verkhoyansk Range, moderate the Siberian climate. The high ridges act as a physical block for weather patterns. They obstruct air flows that move in from the west. This obstruction decreases the amount of snowfall on the western plains. Because of this, the mountains change the environment for the lands around them.

Beyond geology, the range holds great cultural value. It contains important sites for traditional Yakut culture. These include Ynnakh Mountain, also known as Mat'-Gora. There are also unique kigilyakh rock formations found here. To protect these natural and cultural wonders, the Moma Natural Park was established. This park is located in the southern zone of the range.
